| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Helen E. "Betty" (nee Lindsay) Christy, | 4 | | formerly of Hinsdale, who passed away on January 26, 2014; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Helen Christy grew up in the Hyde Park | 6 | | neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago and attended | 7 | | University High School, where she met her future husband, | 8 | | William Christy; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Helen Christy moved to Hinsdale in 1955 and, in | 10 | | the early 1960s, opened "La Petite Boutique" on Washington | 11 | | Street, a craft shop where she taught classes and sold homemade | 12 | | items such as silhouettes and miniature balsa wood houses; she | 13 | | eventually opened "Tree Toys", an international mail order | 14 | | crafts company; she taught classes at the College of DuPage and | 15 | | published and sold approximately 140 books and kits with | 16 | | instructions on how to make her products; she sold her business | 17 | | in 1994 but later opened a similar one "Christy Crafts"; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Helen Christy received the Distinguished Service | 19 | | Award in 1965 from the Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills Junior Chamber | 20 | | of Commerce; she was a life-member of the Society of Craft | 21 | | Designers, the Association of Crafts & Creative Industries, a | 22 | | 2001 inductee into the Craft Hall of Fame, and an honorary |

| 1 | | member and patron of the Quilling Guild of England; and
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Helen Christy worked for 19 years for a Hinsdale | 3 | | pediatrician as an office manager and medical assistant; she | 4 | | became involved with the volunteer program at the Hinsdale | 5 | | Hospital and earned her 7000 hour pin for her work in the | 6 | | emergency department from 1956 to the 1990s; and | 7 | | WHEREAS, Helen Christy was a talented entrepreneur | 8 | | committed to spreading the word about her field through | 9 | | instructional books and her craft boutique in Hinsdale; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Helen Christy was the beloved wife of the late | 11 | | William Christy, Sr.; the loving mother of William (Fr. | 12 | | Vladimir) Christy (longtime friend of Mark Dean), Caren Lynn | 13 | | (Edward) Hennessy, Janet Lee Stroh, and the late Lawrence C. | 14 | | Christy; she was "Grandma Betty" to her 10 grandchildren and 15 | 15 | | great-grandchildren; and the fond sister of Jeanne Russack; | 16 | | therefore, be it
| 17 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | 18 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 19 | | Helen E. "Betty" Christy, and extend our sincere condolences to | 20 | | her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | 21 | | further
