| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Jerry | 4 | | Umanos of Chicago; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos received his medical training | 6 | | from the Wayne State University School of Medicine and | 7 | | completed his residency at the Children's Hospital of Michigan; | 8 | | he was also certified by the American Board of Pediatrics; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos spent his career serving children | 10 | | in need, including practicing pediatric medicine at the | 11 | | Lawndale Christian Health Center in Chicago for more than 25 | 12 | | years; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos and his wife, Jan Schuitema, a | 14 | | teacher, spent the past ten years living in Chicago and | 15 | | Afghanistan in order to care for and teach the neediest | 16 | | children; and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos was training, teaching, and | 18 | | working beside physician residents, midwives, and community | 19 | | health workers at Cure International Hospital in Kabul, | 20 | | Afghanistan to care for over 37,000 sick and injured children | 21 | | and mothers every year; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos was instrumental in creating | 2 | | Empowerment Health at Cure International Hospital, a program | 3 | | aimed at teaching Afghan women basic health education and | 4 | | skills to provide health services in their communities; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, On April 24, 2014, a gunman opened fired at Cure | 6 | | International Hospital, killing 3 Americans, including Dr. | 7 | | Jerry Umanos; and | 8 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Jerry Umanos is survived by his wife and their | 9 | | three children; therefore, be it
| 10 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 11 | | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 12 | | we mourn the passing of Dr. Jerry Umanos, and extend our | 13 | | sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew | 14 | | and loved him; and be it further
| 15 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 16 | | presented to the family of Dr. Jerry Umanos as an expression of | 17 | | our deepest sympathy.
