| 1 | | SENATE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Thomas Lawrence "Larry" Phalin of Cary, | 4 | | who passed away on October 21, 2017; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Larry Phalin was born to Thomas and Ellen | 6 | | (Spencer) Phalin on June 4, 1928; he was a descendant of the | 7 | | first landowners in McHenry County and the first child in his | 8 | | family to be born in Woodstock Hospital instead of on one of | 9 | | the two family farms; he was a veteran of the United States | 10 | | Army and served overseas in Korea as a Sherman Tank Driver; he | 11 | | graduated from the University of Illinois; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Larry Phalin was an engineer and eventually became | 13 | | a Research Fellow for The American Can Company, where he | 14 | | created a number of consumer food container packaging patents, | 15 | | many of which are still in use today; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Larry Phalin was the first President and current | 17 | | President Emeritus for the Cary Park District; he and his wife, | 18 | | Pat, were instrumental in forming the District in 1971; as a | 19 | | result of their team efforts, there are currently 52 parks and | 20 | | approximately 846 acres of trail and open spaces in Cary today; | 21 | | and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Larry Phalin had many interests; he was an ardent | 2 | | participant in the McHenry County Genealogical Society and the | 3 | | McHenry Area Historical Society; he perfected his speaking | 4 | | talents through his participation in Toastmasters; he loved to | 5 | | travel and took particular interest in discussions with locals; | 6 | | he often shared his travel experiences with his local | 7 | | Storytellers Group; he was an avid collector of coins and | 8 | | stamps; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Larry Phalin was preceded in death by his parents; | 10 | | and his brothers, Bill and Jack Phalin; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Larry Phalin is survived by his wife of 66 years, | 12 | | Patricia Joan Phalin; his children, Teresa (Joe) Rudnik, Paul | 13 | | (Lisa) Phalin, David (Kathleen) Phalin, and James (Marianne) | 14 | | Phalin; his grandchildren, Matt Mena, Shanna (Brad) | 15 | | Hollandsworth, Ralph Garner, Daniel Phalin, Brett (Molly) | 16 | | Phalin, Aaron Phalin, and Aidan Phalin; his | 17 | | great-grandchildren, Isla and Emme Hollandsworth; his sister, | 18 | | Patricia McDaniel; and his brother, Don (Arline) Phalin; | 19 | | therefore, be it
| 20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | 21 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 22 | | Thomas Lawrence "Larry" Phalin and extend our sincere | 23 | | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved |
