| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | 3 | | to learn of the death of former Illinois State Representative | 4 | | Suzanne L. Deuchler of Aurora; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Rep. Deuchler was born to Elvin and Margaret | 6 | | Clark in Chicago on July 21, 1929; she grew up in Shelbyville; | 7 | | she married Walter Deuchler on February 4, 1951; she earned | 8 | | her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from the University of | 9 | | Illinois in 1951 and later studied at the Dayton Art | 10 | | Institute; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Rep. Deuchler served as the Republican state | 12 | | representative of the 42nd district in the General Assembly | 13 | | from 1981 to 1999; she had previously served as a | 14 | | representative of the West Side of Aurora on the Kane County | 15 | | Board for four years; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Rep. Deuchler was first elected to the General | 17 | | Assembly in 1980, beating an 80-year-old incumbent of 16 | 18 | | years, Al Schoeberlein; during her 18-year tenure, she served | 19 | | on the Education, Appropriations, Banking, Transportation, and | 20 | | Environment committees in the Illinois House of | 21 | | Representatives; she was known for her support of women's | 22 | | issues, including abortion rights and the Equal Rights |

| 1 | | Amendment, and for supporting environmental issues, being | 2 | | instrumental in establishing the Nelson Lake Nature Preserve | 3 | | in Kane County; she was also a supporter of education | 4 | | initiatives, and she was one of the representatives | 5 | | instrumental in establishing the Illinois Math and Science | 6 | | Academy in Aurora and the Orchard Road interchange with | 7 | | Interstate 88, which was later renamed the Suzanne Deuchler | 8 | | Honorary Interchange in 2018; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Rep. Deuchler served as president of the local | 10 | | chapter of the League of Women Voters and on many nonprofit | 11 | | boards, including the Aurora Historical Society, the Rush | 12 | | Copley Medical Center Governing Board, SciTech, and the | 13 | | National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Kane-South, DeKalb, | 14 | | and Kendall Counties (NAMI KDK); she was a longtime member of | 15 | | the American Association of University Women; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Rep. Deuchler was a world traveler, a talented | 17 | | watercolorist, and a mother of two; she will be remembered for | 18 | | her bright smile and her many accomplishments; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Rep. Deuchler is survived by her husband of 71 | 20 | | years, Walter Deuchler; her sister, Nancy Clark Amstutz; her | 21 | | daughter, Maryll (Tom) Moon; her granddaughters, Erika | 22 | | Kleibrink and Claudia Moon; her nieces, Betsy (Donald) Flett | 23 | | and Kathy Finn; and her nephews, Edward (Robyn Weinstein) |

| 2 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | 3 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 4 | | former Illinois State Representative Suzanne L. Deuchler and | 5 | | extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all | 6 | | who knew and loved her; and be it further
| 7 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 8 | | presented to the family of Rep. Deuchler as an expression of | 9 | | our deepest sympathy.
