| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Samuel Wilson Hurley Jr. of Chicago, who | 4 | | passed away on December 22, 2010; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, He was born on May 26, 1935 in Chicago, the son of | 6 | | Louise Capshaw and Samuel Wilson Hurley, Sr.; he was raised in | 7 | | a Christian Science upbringing that set his foundation for | 8 | | life; he attended John Marshall High School in Chicago and was | 9 | | a member of the National Honor Society, which led to his | 10 | | induction into the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Chicago; in | 11 | | 1956, he married Bonnie Jean Sims; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, He served in the ROTC and transitioned into the | 13 | | United States Air Force, where he served as a First Lieutenant; | 14 | | he served and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan; he later | 15 | | attended the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) where he | 16 | | received a Civil Engineering degree and was inducted into the | 17 | | Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity; he became a lifetime member in | 18 | | 1981, and celebrated 50 years of membership in 2005; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, He obtained a Master's degree in Public Works from | 20 | | the University of Pittsburgh; he was later appointed Deputy | 21 | | Commissioner of Public Works, Interim Commissioner of the | 22 | | Chicago Department of Sewers, and the Commissioner of Water for |

| 1 | | the City of Chicago; he later worked with Globetrotters | 2 | | Engineering in the Chicago O'Hare International Airport | 3 | | Development program, which included the installation of the | 4 | | "People Mover" and the opening of the Delta Flight Center; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, He was a member of the National Society of | 6 | | Professional Engineers, the National Society of Black | 7 | | Engineers, the Institute for Municipal Engineering, the | 8 | | American Public Works Association, the Institute for | 9 | | Administrative Management of American Public Works | 10 | | Association, the Chicago Assembly, the DIVITS Golf Club, and | 11 | | Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated; and | 12 | | WHEREAS, He and his wife moved to Spring, Texas in 2005; he | 13 | | continued to serve in ministerial positions, including serving | 14 | | as "Security" for the Children's Ministry at Northside | 15 | | Christian Church; and | 16 | | WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents and his | 17 | | sister, Doris Burnley; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Samuel Wilson Hurley Jr. is survived by his wife, | 19 | | Bonnie; his children, Pamela Holmes (Jesse), Michael | 20 | | (Christye), Steven, Sr. (Tonia), Angela McElroy (Roderick | 21 | | Sr.), and Kimberly Sneed (Kyle); his grandchildren, Jasmine, | 22 | | Christofer, Dallas (Sade), Nicholas, Steven, Jr., Eryn, |

| 5 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | 6 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | 7 | | his family and friends, the passing of Samuel Wilson Hurley | 8 | | Jr.; and be it further
