| 2 | | WHEREAS, The Katherine Dunham Centers for Arts and | 3 | | Humanities (KDCAH) will celebrate 2012 as a banner year at the | 4 | | 5th Annual Black-Tie Gala/Silent Auction on August 4, 2012 at | 5 | | Deserts on the Boulevard in St. Louis, Missouri; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Miss Katherine Dunham, noted dancer, | 7 | | choreographer, anthropologist, and humanitarian, was born on | 8 | | June 22, 1909; she passed away on May 21, 2006, and would have | 9 | | celebrated her 103rd birthday this year; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, 2012 marks the 20th anniversary of the Dunham | 11 | | Technique Certification Workshop, which has certified 21 dance | 12 | | instructors, including 5 grandmaster teachers and 5 master | 13 | | teachers; 2012 also marks the 20th anniversary of Miss Dunham's | 14 | | 47-day fast to protest the repatriation of Haitian refugees; | 15 | | and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, The United States Postal Service released a | 17 | | forever stamp in commemoration of Miss Dunham's legacy as a | 18 | | master choreographer in Los Angeles, California on July 28, | 19 | | 2012; and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, 2012 is the year of the 29th Annual Dunham | 21 | | Technique Seminar, where individuals are taught not only the |

| 1 | | Dunham Technique, but learn about the philosophy, pedagogy, and | 2 | | choreography of Miss Dunham; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, KDCAH will present awards to the Arbogast Family | 4 | | and Mr. Mark Kern for individual philanthropy; the Casino Queen | 5 | | for organizational philanthropy; and the Lifetime Achievement | 6 | | Award to Joan Myers Brown; and | 7 | | WHEREAS, The 5th Annual Gala/Silent Auction will celebrate | 8 | | these extraordinary accomplishments and will be co-hosted by | 9 | | actor, dancer, and singer Debbie Allen, as well as Ron Himes, | 10 | | actor, choreographer, and founding director of the St. Louis | 11 | | Black Repertory company; therefore, be it
| 12 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 13 | | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 14 | | we thank and applaud the Board of Directors of the Katherine | 15 | | Dunham Centers for Arts and Humanities for keeping the legacy | 16 | | of Katherine Dunham alive, visible, and viable in the Metro | 17 | | East area; and be it further
| 18 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 19 | | presented to the Katherine Dunham Centers for Arts and | 20 | | Humanities as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
