| 1 | | SENATE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Mayor Aaron T. Shepley of Crystal Lake, | 4 | | who passed away on May 4, 2020; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Mayor Shepley grew up in Crystal Lake; he | 6 | | graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 1985; he earned | 7 | | his Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois College of Law | 8 | | in 1988; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Mayor Shepley served as general counsel for | 10 | | Centegra Health System from 2002 to 2018; he served as vice | 11 | | president and senior associate general counsel at Northwestern | 12 | | Medicine from 2018 until his death; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Mayor Shepley spent two years as a Crystal Lake | 14 | | city council member from 1997 to 1999; he was first elected | 15 | | mayor in April 1999; he served in that position for over 21 | 16 | | years until his death, making him the city's longest serving | 17 | | mayor; during his tenure, he worked to recruit businesses to | 18 | | fill the city's vacant storefronts, particularly along Route | 19 | | 14; he championed the efforts for a united city council that | 20 | | worked together for the purpose and vision of making Crystal | 21 | | Lake a great place to live; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Outside of politics, Mayor Shepley co-founded the | 2 | | Crystal Lake Strikers in 2008, a summertime drum corps for | 3 | | local adults that became one of the most popular entertainment | 4 | | acts in the Chicago area; since its founding, his organization | 5 | | has marched hundreds of miles in local parades, performed in | 6 | | front of millions of people, appeared live on television | 7 | | multiple times, and donated thousands towards college | 8 | | scholarships; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Mayor Shepley was involved in a number of | 10 | | organizations, including serving on the advisory committees of | 11 | | the Raue Center for the Arts and Shaw Media Illinois; he | 12 | | enjoyed sports, bicycling, action photography, and playing | 13 | | drums as part of the five-person band What About This?; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Mayor Shepley will be remembered as a tireless | 15 | | public servant who advocated for his community as well as a | 16 | | deeply committed family man; his legacy serves as an | 17 | | inspiration for residents and businesses alike to further serve | 18 | | their community; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Mayor Shepley is survived by his wife, Regan | 20 | | Daniels Shepley, and his daughters, Chase and Madison; | 21 | | therefore, be it

| 1 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 2 | | Mayor Aaron T. Shepley and extend our sincere condolences to | 3 | | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | 4 | | further
| 5 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 6 | | presented to the family of Mayor Shepley as an expression of | 7 | | our deepest sympathy.
