| 2 | | WHEREAS, Lung cancer kills, on average, 158,000 Americans | 3 | | every year, more than any other form of cancer; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, While smoking is the most common cause of lung | 5 | | cancer, secondhand smoke exposure, radon, asbestos, and | 6 | | genetic disorders have also long been known to cause lung | 7 | | cancer; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, The World Health Organization's International | 9 | | Agency for Research on Cancer recently added outdoor air | 10 | | pollution and particulate matter to the growing list of air | 11 | | pollutants known to cause lung cancer; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Although avoiding exposure to these carcinogens, | 13 | | e.g. cigarette smoke, asbestos, air pollution, etc., is the | 14 | | best way to prevent lung cancer, people cannot always avoid | 15 | | them because they are so widespread; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, The 5-year survival rate for lung cancer is only | 17 | | about 17%, among the lowest of all types of cancer; and | 18 | | WHEREAS, Early diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer | 19 | | greatly improves survival rates; however, most cases are not | 20 | | diagnosed until later stages; and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Early diagnosis of lung cancer using low-dose CT | 2 | | scans has shown promise in a high risk population, but is not | 3 | | yet a generally accepted cancer screening method in the United | 4 | | States; and | 5 | | WHEREAS, It is estimated that approximately 72,000 | 6 | | American women will die of lung cancer in 2014, accounting for | 7 | | 26% of all female deaths due to cancer; and | 8 | | WHEREAS, Someone in the United States is told that he or | 9 | | she has lung cancer every 2 1/2 minutes; therefore, be it
| 10 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | 11 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we designate August 1, | 12 | | 2014 as World Lung Cancer Day in the State of Illinois in order | 13 | | to raise awareness of this growing health risk.
