| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are pleased to congratulate Edna Mae Smith on | 4 | | the occasion of her 100th birthday on September 27, 2012; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Edna Mae Smith was born on September 27, 1912, in | 6 | | Hope, Arkansas; her parents are Elvesta and Jolly Johnson; she | 7 | | married Claude Smith in 1931; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Edna Mae Smith was raised on Dewitt Plantation; | 9 | | since the age of 11, she was employed as a day work, making | 10 | | roughly $5 a day; she continued in that line of employment, | 11 | | working in various homes in Lake Forest, Highland Park and | 12 | | Waukegan until she fell ill; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, On March 25, 1947, Edna Mae Smith and her husband | 14 | | moved to Waukegan to join her sibling, Myrtle Wilkins, who | 15 | | attended Shiloh Baptist Church; Edna Mae and Claude both joined | 16 | | the church 4 days later; she subsequently became an usher, and | 17 | | later a Deaconess, at the church; she has also attended many | 18 | | National Conventions throughout the United States and held | 19 | | various other positions with the church, including 2nd | 20 | | Vice-President and President of the Shiloh Usher Board; and
| 21 | | WHEREAS, Edna Mae Smith was once part of a 5-member |

| 1 | | religious singing group; the group performed at various | 2 | | churches in Hope and Stuttgart, Arkansas; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Edna Mae Smith serves as a model of hard work, | 4 | | integrity, and dedication for the people of the State of | 5 | | Illinois; therefore, be it
| 6 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 7 | | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 8 | | we congratulate Edna Mae Smith on the occasion of her 100th | 9 | | birthday and wish her many happy and healthy years to come; and | 10 | | be it further
| 11 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 12 | | presented to Edna Mae Smith as a symbol of our esteem and | 13 | | respect.
