| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 |
| Representatives are pleased to recognize significant | 4 |
| achievements in the lives of the citizens of the State of | 5 |
| Illinois; and
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, Torrence Harris was named the "Young Man of the | 7 |
| Year" by the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce and Industry; | 8 |
| and
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, Torrence Harris is a sophomore attending Lyons | 10 |
| Township High School; he has been involved in the La Grange | 11 |
| Area Community Extension Project (CEP) since he was 9 years | 12 |
| old; and
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Harris is very involved as a teen leader in | 14 |
| his school; he is the first African American President of his | 15 |
| class; as a freshman, he was the only student of that class to | 16 |
| emcee the All School Assembly, and he has been an emcee for | 17 |
| four assemblies since then; he has served as a tour guide on | 18 |
| the Freshman Experience Day, a day devoted to interacting with | 19 |
| incoming students to share experiences about Lyons Township | 20 |
| High School; and he has worked with his peers to plan and | 21 |
| implement service projects to benefit the school and the | 22 |
| community; and
| 23 |
| WHEREAS, Torrence Harris is also involved in sports as his | 24 |
| school; he is a small forward for the basketball team, a | 25 |
| running back for the football team, and he participates in the | 26 |
| hurdles, high jump, and short distance relay events for the | 27 |
| track team; and
| 28 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Harris is a member of Youth Life, a | 29 |
| non-denominational religious organization, and has attended | 30 |
| its weekly programs and camp; Youth Life has a weekly program, |

| where the members sing songs, pray, read the Bible, and learn | 2 |
| about life, and a yearly camp with members attending from | 3 |
| around the world; and
| 4 |
| WHEREAS, Torrence Harris has been instrumental in the | 5 |
| success of multiple service programs including: the Teen Bash, | 6 |
| where he was solely responsible for running the basketball | 7 |
| tournament; the Family Festival; the Community Block Party; and | 8 |
| a work trip to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina; and from | 9 |
| January through March, Torrence and other high school students | 10 |
| planned and implemented two Y Parties for 5th through 8th | 11 |
| graders; and
| 12 |
| WHEREAS, One of Mr. Harris' goals is to make a difference | 13 |
| at his school; he is dedicated and works hard at each of the | 14 |
| projects in which he is involved; therefore, be it
| 15 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 16 |
| NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 17 |
| we congratulate Torrence Harris on his outstanding leadership | 18 |
| skills, his work to better his school and community, and his | 19 |
| recent selection as "Young Man of the Year" by the West | 20 |
| Suburban Chamber of Commerce and Industry; and be it further
| 21 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 22 |
| presented to Torrence Harris as an expression of our esteem.
