| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois General Assembly are | 3 | | saddened to learn of the death of
Bishop Arthur Brazier, who | 4 | | passed away on October 22, 2010; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Bishop Arthur Brazier was a civil rights activist | 6 | | and community leader known throughout the world for his great | 7 | | compassion and his unwavering devotion to God; he served as | 8 | | pastor of the Apostolic Church of God in Chicago for 48 years | 9 | | up until his retirement in 2008; he continued to serve as | 10 | | pastor emeritus until his passing; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Bishop Arthur Brazier was a central figure in | 12 | | driving out gang violence in his community; he helped lead the | 13 | | fight for affordable housing and revitalizing his community; he | 14 | | also marched alongside Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to protest | 15 | | segregation and was responsible for bringing Dr. Martin Luther | 16 | | King, Jr., to Chicago in 1964; and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Bishop Arthur Brazier was a member of the Public | 18 | | Buildings Commission of Chicago; he also served as a lecturer | 19 | | at several leading universities, including the University of | 20 | | Chicago, Northwestern University, Harvard University, and | 21 | | Antioch College; and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Bishop Arthur Brazier was the founder of the | 2 | | Woodlawn Organization, the Woodlawn Preservation and | 3 | | Investment Corporation, and the Fund for Community | 4 | | Redevelopment and Revitalization; he was also a national leader | 5 | | in community development; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Bishop Arthur Brazier was the author of "Black | 7 | | Self-Determination", "Saved by Grace and Grace Alone", and | 8 | | "Delivery Systems for Model Cities"; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Bishop Arthur Brazier is survived by his wife, | 10 | | Isabelle; his son, Dr. Byron T. Brazier; his daughters, Lola | 11 | | Hillman, Janice Dortch, and Rosalyn Shepherd; and his 7 | 12 | | grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
| 13 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | 14 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES | 15 | | CONCURRING HEREIN, that we mourn, along with his family and | 16 | | friends, the passing of Bishop Arthur Brazier; and be it | 17 | | further
