| 1 | | SENATE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of State Senator George P. Shadid, who | 4 | | passed away on February 3, 2018; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Senator Shadid was born in Clinton, Iowa to Edna | 6 | | Massad and Philip A Shadid, the first generation of proud | 7 | | Lebanese immigrants on May 15, 1929; he married Lorraine K. | 8 | | Unes on May 30, 1953; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Senator Shadid began his career in public service | 10 | | when he became a Peoria Police Officer in 1953; he rose to the | 11 | | rank of lieutenant by 1976; he was elected to his first public | 12 | | office when he was elected Peoria County Sheriff in 1976; and | 13 | | WHEREAS, Senator Shadid served as the state senator from | 14 | | the 46th District of Illinois from 1993 to 2006; his most | 15 | | notable seatmate in the time that he served was then-State | 16 | | Senator Barack Obama; this led to a lifelong friendship between | 17 | | him and President Barack Obama; and | 18 | | WHEREAS, Senator Shadid was known to many in Peoria and | 19 | | throughout the State as a selfless public servant; he listened | 20 | | to his constituents and was always there to offer a helping | 21 | | hand; he prided himself on voting the way he thought was best |

| 1 | | for his constituency and not along party lines; and | 2 | | WHEREAS, Senator Shadid worked hard in the Illinois State | 3 | | Senate for the people of the 46th Senate District; he and Rep. | 4 | | David Leitch joined forces in 2002 to secure a $10 million | 5 | | state loan to keep Bartonville's Keystone Steel and Wire from | 6 | | closing its doors; and | 7 | | WHEREAS, Senator Shadid was a husband, brother, father, | 8 | | grandfather, and uncle; he always made time for his family | 9 | | throughout his career and never lost sight of what was | 10 | | important; he always supported his family in every endeavor in | 11 | | their lives; he loved both his sons, Jim and George Jr., very | 12 | | much; he supported his son, Jim Shadid, on becoming the U.S. | 13 | | district judge for central Illinois; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Senator Shadid was proceeded in death by his son, | 15 | | George Shadid Jr.; and his siblings, Gladys Abraham, Louise | 16 | | Shadid, Joan Petit, Jeannette Harris, Mitchell Shadid, and | 17 | | William Shadid; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Senator Shadid is survived by his wife, Lorraine | 19 | | K. Unes; his son, Jim (Jane) Shadid; his daughter-in-law, Mikie | 20 | | Shadid; his grandchildren, James E. (Anne) Shadid, Joseph G. | 21 | | Shadid, Margaret L. Shadid, and Lauren E. Shadid; his sister, | 22 | | Pauline Unes; and his brother, Fred (Jean) Shadid; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Senator Shadid will be remembered for his public | 2 | | service, family values, friendship, and above all else, his | 3 | | compassion for his fellow man; therefore, be it
| 4 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | 5 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 6 | | State Senator George P. Shadid and extend our sincere | 7 | | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | 8 | | him; and be it further
| 9 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 10 | | presented to the family of Senator Shadid as an expression of | 11 | | our deepest sympathy.
