| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of this Body are honored to recognize | 3 |
| significant milestones in the lives of the people of this | 4 |
| State; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that Oriella Robinson | 6 |
| of Edwardsville is celebrating the 103rd anniversary of her | 7 |
| birth; and
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, Oriella May Robinson was born on September 22, | 9 |
| 1903, in Edwardsville, the second child of Edward and Alice | 10 |
| Ellington Robinson; her siblings were older brother, | 11 |
| Courtland, younger sisters, Irene Madison and Malvena Hayes, | 12 |
| and younger brothers, Edward Udell Robinson and Ralph Robinson; | 13 |
| and
| 14 |
| WHEREAS, Ms. Robinson is a member of Wesley Chapel A.M.E. | 15 |
| Church in Edwardsville; she joined the church in 1917 at the | 16 |
| age of 14, during a revival; she says that she loves the church | 17 |
| and once she joined, she never left; she cleaned the church on | 18 |
| Saturdays and gave socials to help pay the pastor's salary; and
| 19 |
| WHEREAS, To earn a living, Ms. Robinson cooked and cleaned | 20 |
| for private families; she also cooked at the St. James Hotel | 21 |
| and the Leland Hotel in Edwardsville, where she was paid $10 | 22 |
| per week; and
| 23 |
| WHEREAS, Throughout her lifetime, Ms. Robinson has seen | 24 |
| many things; some of her early memories include paying five or | 25 |
| ten cents to see a "silent" movie, with African Americans | 26 |
| segregated in the balcony and off to the side in the theater; | 27 |
| she attended the segregated Lincoln School in Edwardsville, | 28 |
| where she finished the eighth grade; she recalls going to the | 29 |
| city park where bands played, window shopping at the Palace | 30 |
| Store, using a well before running water was installed in the |

| house, using oil lamps before electricity was available in | 2 |
| homes, the ice man delivering ice, heating the house with coal, | 3 |
| and cooking, baking, and canning on a "cook" stove with a fire | 4 |
| built inside; and | 5 |
| WHEREAS, The Lincoln School Alumni Foundation is hosting a | 6 |
| birthday party in her honor on September 23, 2006; therefore, | 7 |
| be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 9 |
| NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 10 |
| we congratulate Oriella Robinson on the occasion of her 103rd | 11 |
| birthday, and we extend to her our sincere best wishes for the | 12 |
| future; and be it further

| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 14 |
| presented to Ms. Robinson as an expression of our respect and | 15 |
| esteem.
