| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Marguerite Sara "Rete" Kaufman of | 4 | | Woodstock, who passed away on August 16, 2014; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Marguerite Kaufman was born in Woodstock on August | 6 | | 14, 1913 to the Reverend Dr. Roger and Blanche (nee Hostetter) | 7 | | Kaufman; she was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and | 8 | | graduated from Woodstock Public High School in 1931; she | 9 | | received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Carthage College in | 10 | | 1935 and later earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of | 11 | | Science in library science from the University of Illinois; she | 12 | | also took doctoral-level courses; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Marguerite Kaufman's professional career began | 14 | | with 2 years
of intermittent teaching assignments; she spent | 15 | | several years teaching at Woodstock Community High School, | 16 | | eventually also
serving as the school's librarian; she then | 17 | | moved to Iowa to work as teacher-librarian at the State School
| 18 | | for the Blind; advancing professionally in her field | 19 | | necessitated several geographic moves, which included working | 20 | | as
a librarian at Midland College in Nebraska, then at Carthage | 21 | | College, the University of Illinois Architecture
Library, and | 22 | | Elmhurst College; she then moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts | 23 | | and spent 6
years as the architecture reference librarian at |

| 1 | | Harvard University's Graduate School of Design;
she returned to | 2 | | Illinois and served as the Head Librarian of the Art and | 3 | | Architecture Library and
as Assistant Professor of Library | 4 | | Administration at the University of Illinois; she retired from | 5 | | the University of Illinois in 1974 and returned to Woodstock; | 6 | | and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Marguerite Kaufman was an avid White Sox fan and | 8 | | an enthusiastic bird watcher with the local Audubon Society; | 9 | | from 1980 to 1998,
she fed her love of learning and sense of | 10 | | adventure by traveling via train and bus to 29 different
| 11 | | elderhostels across the United States; she also enjoyed | 12 | | walking, tending to indoor and outdoor plants, participating
in | 13 | | Grace Lutheran Church's women's circles, and attending Retired | 14 | | Teacher Association events; among
extended family members, she | 15 | | was known for her carefully chosen gifts of books to the | 16 | | children and for
the designer Barbie doll clothing she sewed by | 17 | | hand; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Marguerite Kaufman was preceded in death by her | 19 | | parents and brother; and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Marguerite Kaufman is survived by cousins, Edna | 21 | | Steadman, Dan
(Marilyn) Steadman and children, Bruce (Lois) | 22 | | Gerloff and children, Brian (Carole) Gerloff and children,
| 23 | | Pamela Gerloff, Jane Gerloff (god-daughter), Lisa (Bill) |

| 3 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | 4 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 5 | | Marguerite Sara "Rete" Kaufman, and extend our sincere | 6 | | condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved | 7 | | her; and be it further
| 8 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 9 | | presented to the family of Marguerite Kaufman as an expression | 10 | | of our deepest sympathy.
