| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Karen L. Daniel, who passed away on | 4 | | December 26, 2019 at the age of 62; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Karen Daniel was born on February 1, 1957 to Mary | 6 | | K. Daniel and the late Richard H. Daniel and grew up in Los | 7 | | Angeles; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Karen Daniel earned her undergraduate degree from | 9 | | the University of California, Davis and then earned her law | 10 | | degree from Harvard Law School; she moved to Chicago in 1981; | 11 | | and | 12 | | WHEREAS, Karen Daniel began her career in the State | 13 | | Appellate Defender's Office, the agency that provides | 14 | | representation to indigent inmates in appeals; in 2000, she was | 15 | | hired by Lawrence Marshall to work with the Center on Wrongful | 16 | | Convictions at Northwestern University School of Law, after he | 17 | | heard about her reputation as a brilliant attorney with a huge | 18 | | heart; and | 19 | | WHEREAS, Karen Daniel started as a part-time appointee and | 20 | | eventually became the co-director of the Center on Wrongful | 21 | | Convictions; she was responsible for the release and |

| 1 | | exoneration of many wrongfully convicted people throughout her | 2 | | career; at least 20 people regained their freedom due to her | 3 | | work; and | 4 | | WHEREAS, Karen Daniel retired from the Center on Wrongful | 5 | | Convictions and was set to take a new job at the Exoneration | 6 | | Project affiliated with the University of Chicago; she was | 7 | | always working and was extremely dedicated to righting the | 8 | | injustices of the criminal justice system; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Karen Daniel was recently named Professor Emerita | 10 | | of Law at Northwestern University School of Law; she taught and | 11 | | mentored hundreds of students, inspiring many to pursue a | 12 | | career helping the wrongfully convicted; she earned respect for | 13 | | her commitment to helping others and never assumed that an | 14 | | individual was guilty just because they were in prison; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Karen Daniel was not afraid to take the hard | 16 | | cases; her perseverance in the fight for justice was matched | 17 | | only by her care for her clients; she will be remembered for | 18 | | her dedication to those wrongfully convicted as well as her | 19 | | love for her family and friends; and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Karen Daniel is survived by her husband, Alan | 21 | | Goldberg; her son, Scott Daniel Goldberg; her stepchildren, | 22 | | Julia (Daniel) Alamillo and Laura and Diana Goldberg; her |

| 3 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | 4 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing | 5 | | Karen L. Daniel and extend our sincere condolences to her | 6 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | 7 | | further
| 8 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 9 | | presented to the family of Karen Daniel as an expression of our | 10 | | deepest sympathy.
