| 1 | | SENATE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability | 3 | | and the most common cause of reading, writing, and spelling | 4 | | difficulties; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Dyslexia affects 70%-80% of people with reading | 6 | | difficulties and is more common than autism, attention deficit | 7 | | disorder, and attention deficit hyperactive disorder; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, At least 2 million people in Illinois show | 9 | | symptoms of dyslexia; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Dyslexia is a neurological and genetic disorder, | 11 | | affecting all ethnicities and socio-economic statuses equally; | 12 | | and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Students with dyslexia face difficulty learning | 14 | | to read and, if left undiagnosed, often become frustrated with | 15 | | academic study; and | 16 | | WHEREAS, With the help of intervention before 1st grade, | 17 | | students with dyslexia can learn to read and write at grade | 18 | | level; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, If children with dyslexia are poor readers in 3rd |

| 1 | | grade, they will likely remain poor readers into their adult | 2 | | lives; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Globally, great strides have been made to raise | 4 | | awareness about dyslexia to promote early diagnosis, including | 5 | | the designation of October as National Dyslexia Awareness Month | 6 | | in the United States of America; therefore, be it
| 7 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | 8 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize the | 9 | | national observance of Dyslexia Awareness Week during the last | 10 | | week of October in 2014; and be it further
| 11 | | RESOLVED, That we designate the week of December 8, 2014 as | 12 | | Dyslexia Awareness Week in the State of Illinois; and be it | 13 | | further | 14 | | RESOLVED, That we recognize the importance of improving | 15 | | awareness and encouraging early diagnosis of dyslexia; and be | 16 | | it further | 17 | | RESOLVED, That we wholeheartedly support a State, | 18 | | national, and global commitment to improving the reading | 19 | | abilities of children and adults who struggle with dyslexia.
