| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Karen (nee Campe) Mateyka of | 4 | | Edwardsville, who passed away on February 18, 2015; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Karen Mateyka was born in Lebanon on August 4, | 6 | | 1937 to Harold and Arline (nee Neumann) Campe; she was raised | 7 | | in Lebanon, where she was an honor student and graduate of | 8 | | Lebanon High School; she was awarded a scholastic scholarship | 9 | | to Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, where she was a | 10 | | cheerleader and member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Society; after | 11 | | moving to Edwardsville, she completed a Bachelor of Science in | 12 | | History and Art History at Southern Illinois | 13 | | University-Edwardsville; she married William J. "Bill" Mateyka | 14 | | on November 22, 1957 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in | 15 | | Edwardsville; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Karen Mateyka became an active member and served | 17 | | in leadership roles in various Edwardsville organizations, | 18 | | including Junior Service and the YMCA; since 1992, she has been | 19 | | a member of the Edwardsville Historic Preservation Commission | 20 | | and served as Chairman of the organization; in September of | 21 | | 2000, she received a Local Preservation Award from the Illinois | 22 | | Association of Historic Preservation Commissions; she | 23 | | researched and wrote 5 local landmark applications, a landmark |

| 1 | | brochure, and coordinated the publication of "Edwardsville: An | 2 | | Illustrated History"; she assisted with the development of the | 3 | | Archi-Room at the Edwardsville Public Library and with the | 4 | | organization of the Route 66 Festival; she spearheaded the | 5 | | effort to rehang the old bank clock, which resulted in Clock | 6 | | Tower Park on Main Street; she chaired the brick street | 7 | | restoration project and was instrumental in the city's purchase | 8 | | of the Col. Benjamin Stephenson House; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Karen Mateyka was named a Paul Harris Fellow by | 10 | | the Edwardsville Rotary Club for her work in preservation and | 11 | | was appointed to the Illinois Historic Advisory Council in | 12 | | November of 2000; she was a board member of the Friends of Col. | 13 | | Benjamin Stephenson House; her dedication to the Stephenson | 14 | | House is noted by her research of the complete genealogy of the | 15 | | Stephenson family; in April of 2007, she published the book | 16 | | "Henry the Stephenson House Mouse: A Diary", detailing the | 17 | | restoration of Col. Benjamin Stephenson's house and the history | 18 | | of the Stephenson family; in May of 2012, she received the | 19 | | Historic Preservation Recognition Award from the National | 20 | | Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution for her | 21 | | excellent volunteer work in historic preservation; and
| 22 | | WHEREAS, Karen Mateyka was was a member of St. Boniface | 23 | | Catholic Church in Edwardsville; and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Karen Mateyka was preceded in death by her parents | 2 | | and her daughter, Jeanne Mateyka; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Karen Mateyka is survived by her son, Dan (Denise) | 4 | | Mateyka; her daughter, Sarah L. "Sally" Mateyka; her | 5 | | granddaughter, Taylor Danielle Mateyka; and her sister, Dona | 6 | | (John) Shieppe; therefore, be it
| 7 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | 8 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 9 | | Karen Mateyka, and extend our sincere condolences to her | 10 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | 11 | | further
