1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS. The members of the Senate of the State of
3 Illinois were saddened to learn of the death of Elizabeth H.
4 "Ibby" Malott of Kenilworth on May 18, 2003; and
5 WHEREAS, Mrs. Malott was born in Duluth, Minnesota; her
6 father's job with a Canadian shipping company led the family
7 to live in Shanghai, China, Japan, and the Philippines; she
8 and her family were evacuated from Shanghai to Canada shortly
9 before World War II and returned to the United States after
10 the war; and
11 WHEREAS, Mrs. Malott graduated in 1953 from Scripps
12 College with a degree in art history and became one of the
13 trustees in 1996; her family helped fund the remodeling of a
14 college building into a common area for socializing and
15 dining; and
16 WHEREAS, Mrs. Malott had also been a trustee of the
17 Lincoln Academy since being appointed in 1978 by Governor
18 James Thompson; she became a regent in 1982; each year the
19 non-profit organization honors outstanding individuals who
20 were born or reside in Illinois; and
21 WHEREAS, Among Mrs. Malott's efforts since joining the
22 Women's Board of the Field Museum in 1978 was chairing its
23 dinner for the opening of the Northwest Coast Exhibit in
24 1982; she also volunteered in the museum's anthropology
25 department; and
26 WHEREAS, After being diagnosed with osteoporosis about 10
27 years ago, she began to encourage women to have a bone
28 density test; and
29 WHEREAS, Mrs. Malott's childhood experiences infused in
30 her an insatiable curiosity, an adventuresome spirit, and an
31 appetite for learning; she loved non-traditional trips with

1 her husband, including dog sledding across Baffin Island in
2 Canada, witnessing the Polar Bear migration in Manitoba,
3 visiting the South Pole, and circumventing the Arctic on a
4 Russian nuclear icebreaker; and
5 WHEREAS, Mrs. Malott's passing will be deeply felt by
6 many, especially her husband, Robert; her daughters,
7 Elizabeth Pohle and Barbara Kizziah; her son, Deane; her five
8 grandchildren; and her sisters, Renee Spencer, Marcia
9 Ledogar, and Joey Williams; therefore, be it
10 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
11 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of
12 Elizabeth H. "Ibby" Malott along with all who knew and loved
13 her and extend our sincere condolences to her family and
14 friends; and be it further
15 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16 presented to the family of Elizabeth H. Malott as an
17 expression of our deepest sympathy.
