| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate the Village of Glencoe on | 4 | | the occasion of its 150th anniversary on March 29, 2019; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, The Village of Glencoe was first settled by Anson | 6 | | Taylor and several German and English immigrant families; In | 7 | | early 1869, the Village was a small community with less than 30 | 8 | | homes, a few local stores, a country school, a church, and a | 9 | | railway station connected by dirt roads; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Alexander Hammond, the Village founder, and | 11 | | his investors from the Glencoe Company gave serious thought and | 12 | | consideration to the development of the community and began a | 13 | | planning process that predates the creation of the first | 14 | | official Plan Commission in the early 1920s and continues to | 15 | | this day; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, The Village of Glencoe was officially | 17 | | incorporated under a Special Charter granted by an act of the | 18 | | Illinois State legislature on March 29, 1869; since that time, | 19 | | the Village has become a leader and model for other | 20 | | communities, having established a council-manager form of | 21 | | government in 1914, the first in the State of Illinois and one | 22 | | of the first in the nation; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, The Village of Glencoe has also become a leader | 2 | | and model for other communities in protecting the safety of its | 3 | | residents, from the first constables and magistrates in 1869 | 4 | | and the acquisition of the first motorized truck in 1915 to | 5 | | becoming the first municipality in the State of Illinois to | 6 | | combine police and fire protection into a unified Department of | 7 | | Public Safety; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, The Village of Glencoe has always focused on | 9 | | education, from the first one-room schoolhouse sponsored by | 10 | | early settlers through the construction of Central School in | 11 | | the late 1800s, North and South Schools in the 1920s, and West | 12 | | School in the late 1950s; the Village has been a leader in its | 13 | | commitment to teaching and administrative excellence and | 14 | | created an innovative plan to place parks next to its schools | 15 | | to enrich both the mental and physical development of its | 16 | | youth; and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, The Village of Glencoe's residential development | 18 | | represents a museum of domestic architectural styles dating | 19 | | from the mid-19th century, including the work of noted American | 20 | | architects William Boyington, Howard van Doren Shaw, David | 21 | | Adler, George Fred and William Keck, and George W. Maher and | 22 | | renown landscape architects Jens Jensen and Frederick Law | 23 | | Olmsted Jr.; most notably, the Village has the third largest |

| 1 | | collection of Frank Lloyd Wright-designed structures in the | 2 | | world; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, with its wooded bluffs and deep ravines, the | 4 | | Village of Glencoe was declared the "Queen of the Suburbs," by | 5 | | early map makers; the beauty of the Village has been preserved | 6 | | through the conservation of Lakefront Park and enhanced over | 7 | | the years with many additional parks, the development of the | 8 | | Green Bay Trail, and the establishment of the Chicago Botanic | 9 | | Garden in 1972; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, The people who have created, developed, and kept | 11 | | the Village vibrant since its incorporation represent a | 12 | | uniquely diverse group of residents from all racial, ethnic, | 13 | | religious, trade, and business backgrounds who share their love | 14 | | of and commitment to the Village of Glencoe; therefore, be it
| 15 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 16 | | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 17 | | we congratulate the Village of Glencoe on the occasion of its | 18 | | 150th anniversary on March 29, 2019, and we wish them many more | 19 | | successful years; and be it further
| 20 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | 21 | | presented to the President and Board of Trustees of the Village | 22 | | of Glencoe as an expression of our esteem and respect.
