| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | 3 | | to learn of the death of Hurley B. Sutton of East Moline, who | 4 | | passed away on March 27, 2021; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Hurley Sutton was born in Pleasant Hill to Louis | 6 | | and Narcie Sutton on July 30, 1925; he graduated from high | 7 | | school in 1943; shortly thereafter, he was drafted into the | 8 | | U.S. Army as a rifleman during World War II, where he served in | 9 | | the European Theater and survived the Battle of the Hurtgen | 10 | | Forest; as a result of his actions in World War II, he was | 11 | | awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantry Badge, the | 12 | | Bronze Star, and various other medals and accommodations; he | 13 | | graduated from Western Illinois University in 1950; he married | 14 | | Beatrice Grimsley shortly after; together, they had five | 15 | | children, Bruce, Denice, Gregory, Mark, and Daniel, before | 16 | | their marriage ended in 1960; he married Billie Carole Barber | 17 | | in 1962; together, they had two children, Steven and Michael; | 18 | | he raised his family in the Quad City area; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Hurley Sutton became involved with the Illinois | 20 | | Cemetery Association during the 1950s; alongside his business | 21 | | partner Harold Michel, he eventually purchased several | 22 | | cemeteries from Cheyenne, Wyoming to East Moline; he | 23 | | especially loved the Greenview Memorial Gardens in East |

| 1 | | Moline, where he excelled as general manager; he established | 2 | | himself as the predominate salesman in the pre-need funeral | 3 | | business by the 1970s; he earned a number of top state and | 4 | | national awards during his career; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Hurley Sutton purchased a small cabin at Lake | 6 | | Odessa in Wapello, Iowa in 1972, where he truly loved spending | 7 | | time on his pontoon boat, fishing, entertaining, and being the | 8 | | center of attention; he upgraded the cabin to a lake house by | 9 | | 1980, and it remains a special place the Sutton family enjoys | 10 | | to this day; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Hurley Sutton was known for being generous, | 12 | | loving, caring, wise, and a true servant leader; he was a | 13 | | humble, 6'4" gentle giant who touched many lives through his | 14 | | kindness and unconditional love; he was truly one of the | 15 | | greatest men from the Greatest Generation; he will never be | 16 | | forgotten; and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Hurley Sutton was preceded in death by his | 18 | | parents; his sisters, Nancy (Grover) Hilgedick and Louise | 19 | | Thrasher; his brother, Errol Lynn Sutton; his son, Gregory | 20 | | Sutton; and his granddaughter, Rhonda Carlson; and
| 21 | | WHEREAS, Hurley Sutton is survived by his wife of 58 | 22 | | years, Carole (Billie Carole) Sutton; his daughter, Denice |

| 8 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | 9 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 10 | | Hurley B. Sutton and extend our sincere condolences to his | 11 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | 12 | | further
| 13 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 14 | | presented to the family of Hurley Sutton as an expression of | 15 | | our deepest sympathy.
