1 SENATE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of
3 Illinois were saddened to learn of the death of Reverend
4 Doctor James W. Dorsey on Wednesday, January 22, 2003; and
5 WHEREAS, Dr. Dorsey was born on October 18, 1942 in
6 Waukegan to James W. and Margaret Dorsey; he graduated from
7 Novak Elementary School and North Chicago Community High
8 School where he was an Illinois State Champion Wrestler; and
9 WHEREAS, Dr. Dorsey received his Bachelor's Degree from
10 Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin; his Master's Degree
11 was completed at Roosevelt University, and he received his
12 Doctorate from the University of Iowa; and
13 WHEREAS, Dr. Dorsey served his country valiantly for four
14 years in the United States Marine Corps; he worked as a
15 Juvenile and Adult Probation Officer for Lake County; he
16 taught at North Chicago High School and also was Dean of
17 Students; he was ordained into the ministry by the late
18 Reverend J.N. Lightfoot; he served as a professor at the
19 College of Lake County;
20 WHEREAS, An active and energetic community leader, Dr.
21 Dorsey gave freely of his time for lecturing during Black
22 History Month; he was an expert on the history of Lake
23 County's Underground Railroad, and he was the author of Up
24 South and founder of The Sons of Thunder, an organization
25 committed to raising scholarship funds for African-American
26 students; and
27 WHEREAS, Dr. Dorsey will be remembered for his smile and
28 genuine concern for others; his passing has been deeply felt
29 by many, especially his wife of 33 years, Jacqueline Dorsey;
30 his two children, Derrick and Kelly; his mother, Margaret
31 Dorsey; his two sisters, Frances (Pat) Tompkins, and Joan

1 (James) Winston; his two brothers, Curtis (Barbara) Dorsey
2 and Marvin Dorsey; his aunt, Maria McNulty; his three uncles,
3 Fred Hollingsworth, Dean Dorsey, and Mel Dorsey; his two
4 great aunts, Pearl Mullins and Clara Evans; his great uncle,
5 Luster Lovelace; his uncle, Pete Winfrey; his aunt, Marie
6 Winfrey; his three brothers-in-law, Robert (Valda) Whithead,
7 Timothy (Kay) Whitehead, and Lawrence (Laura) Whithead; his
8 two sisters-in-law, Cloepatra (Bruce) Cowins and Mallie
9 (Luke) Nichols; and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces
10 and nephews, cousins, and friends; therefore, be it
11 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL
12 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we join with the
13 family and friends of Reverend Doctor James W. Dorsey in
14 mourning the passing of a kind and generous citizen of
15 Illinois; and be it further
16 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17 presented to the family of Reverend Doctor James W. Dorsey
18 with our sincerest condolences.
