| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The Illinois Chapters of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity | 3 |
| and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority are sponsoring their second annual | 4 |
| legislative visit to the State Capitol; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was founded at | 6 |
| Howard University in Washington, D.C., on January 9, 1914, by | 7 |
| three young, African-American male students, celebrated as the | 8 |
| Honorable A. Langston Taylor, Honorable Leonard F. Morse, and | 9 |
| the Honorable Charles I. Brown; and
| 10 |
| WHEREAS, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded on | 11 |
| January 16, 1920, by five young women, celebrated as the | 12 |
| Honorable Arizona Cleaver Stemons, Honorable Pearl A. Neal, | 13 |
| Honorable Myrtle Tyler Faithful, Honorable Viola Tyler Goings, | 14 |
| and Honorable Fannie Pettie Watts, respectfully know as the | 15 |
| Five Pearls, at Howard University in Washington, D.C.; and
| 16 |
| WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma and Zeta Phi Beta are the only | 17 |
| historically Greek-lettered organizations in the National | 18 |
| Pan-Hellenic Council to be constitutionally bound; and
| 19 |
| WHEREAS, From its inception, the Founders conceived Phi | 20 |
| Beta Sigma as a mechanism to deliver services to the general | 21 |
| community, rather than gaining skills to be utilized |

| exclusively for themselves or their immediate families; this | 2 |
| deep conviction is mirrored in the Fraternity's motto, "Culture | 3 |
| For Service and Service for Humanity"; and
| 4 |
| WHEREAS, Since its inception Zeta Phi Beta has chronicled a | 5 |
| number of firsts; Zeta Phi Beta was the first Greek-letter | 6 |
| organization to charter a chapter in Africa in 1948; to form | 7 |
| adult and youth auxiliary groups; to centralize its operations | 8 |
| in a national headquarters; and
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, Both Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and Zeta Phi Beta | 10 |
| sorority are honored to have formed many wonderful, | 11 |
| community-based partnerships with March of Dimes, American | 12 |
| Cancer Society, American Diabetes Research, NAACP, National | 13 |
| Pan-Hellenic Council, and the Urban League; therefore, be it
| 14 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | 15 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that, in recognition of the | 16 |
| achievements of the members of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. | 17 |
| and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and the values for which they | 18 |
| strive, we proclaim Wednesday, May 20, 2009 as the Second | 19 |
| Annual Phi Beta Sigma and Zeta Phi Beta Day in the State of | 20 |
| Illinois; and be it further
| 21 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 22 |
| presented to the International President of Phi Beta Sigma |
