| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 |
| learn of the death of Harry Voigt of Oak Park, who passed away | 4 |
| on July 1, 2007; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Harry Voigt was born August 2, 1928, in Chicago; | 6 |
| he attended Lane Tech High School, where he was a member of the | 7 |
| swim team; upon graduation in 1946, he joined the United States | 8 |
| Army and served in the post-World War II occupation of Japan; | 9 |
| after his father's death in 1947, Harry was assigned to the | 10 |
| Second Division Artillery at Fort Lewis, Washington, where he | 11 |
| served as meteorologist and also played shortstop on the Army | 12 |
| baseball team; and
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, In 1948, Harry Voigt used his benefits under the | 14 |
| G.I. Bill to enroll at the University of Illinois in Urbana; he | 15 |
| won the Art Department Award of Merit and graduated in 1952 | 16 |
| with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Advertising Design; after | 17 |
| graduation he worked in Urbana as a graphic designer on the | 18 |
| University Educational Foundation's "Our Wonderful World" | 19 |
| encyclopedia; and

| WHEREAS, Harry Voigt was hired by Motorola in 1956 as an | 21 |
| art director and moved back to Chicago; Motorola sent him to | 22 |
| the International Design Conference in Aspen, Colorado in 1962, |

| where he met Hannah Wilkins, a musician; they were married the | 2 |
| following year;
and
| 3 |
| WHEREAS, In 1965, Harry Voigt formed his own graphic design | 4 |
| firm, with clients such as Rand McNally, Scott Foresman, | 5 |
| Wadsworth Publishing, Harris Bank, and the Northern Trust; in | 6 |
| 1981 he won an international design award for his work on A | 7 |
| Short Course in Calculus by Bodh R. Gulati; he was well-known | 8 |
| throughout the Chicago area as a leading graphic designer and | 9 |
| served as president of the Society of Typographic Arts, a | 10 |
| professional association for Chicago designers; and
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, Harry Voigt became an avid tennis player in his | 12 |
| mid-30s, and in 1987 won the Oak Park Tennis Club's Singles "B" | 13 |
| tournament at the age of 59; he continued to play regularly | 14 |
| until his passing; and | 15 |
| WHEREAS, Harry Voigt is survived by his wife, Hannah; his | 16 |
| daughter, Laura; his son, Derek; his daughter-in-law, | 17 |
| Catherine; and four granddaughters who were the light of his | 18 |
| life: Laura's daughter Madeline and Derek and Catherine's | 19 |
| daughters Ashley, Marisa, and Celia; therefore, be it
| 20 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL | 21 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with | 22 |
| his family and friends, the passing of Harry Voigt; and be it |
