| 2 | | WHEREAS, The history of chess spans more than 1,500 years, | 3 | | and the earliest predecessors of the game originated in India, | 4 | | before the 6th century AD; from India, the game spread to the | 5 | | Middle East and subsequently expanded to Southern Europe; in | 6 | | Europe, chess evolved into roughly its current form in the 15th | 7 | | century; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Chess is a recognized sport of the International | 9 | | Olympic Committee and international chess competition is | 10 | | sanctioned by the World Chess Federation (FIDE); and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Chess is sanctioned in Illinois at the high school | 12 | | level by the Illinois High School Association, where an annual | 13 | | State tournament determines a victor; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, National Chess Day is October 12, 2013; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, The United States 113th Congress has recently | 16 | | expressed its support for the designation of St. Louis, | 17 | | Missouri, as the 'National Chess Capital' of the United States | 18 | | to enhance awareness of the educational benefits of chess and | 19 | | to encourage schools and community centers to engage in chess | 20 | | programs to promote problem-solving, critical thinking, | 21 | | spatial awareness, and goal setting; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, The House of Representatives and the Senate of the | 2 | | Illinois General Assembly physically compete against each | 3 | | other in an annual softball game to determine the triumphant | 4 | | chamber, which in many of these contests the House has | 5 | | demonstrated its greater athletic proficiency; therefore, be | 6 | | it
| 7 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | 8 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we proclaim our | 9 | | intellectual superiority by challenging the members of the | 10 | | Illinois House of Representatives to a chess tournament; and be | 11 | | it further
| 12 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate shall host the chess tournament | 13 | | and, upon acceptance of terms by the House, the results shall | 14 | | affirm our claims that we are the utmost mentally astute | 15 | | Chamber of the Illinois 98th General Assembly; and be it | 16 | | further | 17 | | RESOLVED, That the General Assembly Chess Tournament shall | 18 | | also be utilized to promote and enhance awareness of the | 19 | | educational benefits of chess among school-aged children and to | 20 | | encourage all schools and community centers in Illinois to | 21 | | engage in chess programs to promote problem-solving, critical | 22 | | thinking, spatial awareness, and goal setting.
