1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are honored to recognize notable achievements
4 in education in the State of Illinois; and
5 WHEREAS, The Turner Junior High School Scholastic Bowl
6 team in Jacksonville emerged as the 2003 State Champions at
7 the State Scholastic Bowl; and
8 WHEREAS, The Jonathan Turner Junior High School
9 Scholastic Bowl team is comprised of ten seventh graders and
10 ten eighth graders; the criteria for being a part of the team
11 is being in the top 10 percent according to current grades,
12 98th or 99th percentile in standardized test scores, a
13 willingness to learn and apply new knowledge, and the
14 confidence to take a risk; and
15 WHEREAS, The team members must be able to quickly recall
16 information they have learned and articulate that information
17 in a manner consistent with the questions asked and the rules
18 of the match; the team members are arranged into A and B
19 squads according to talent; and
20 WHEREAS, The 2002-2003 A squad is made up of: Priyanka
21 Bose, David Clatterbuck, Billy Fishback, Justin Francis,
22 Brian Jarzen, Brock Jenkins, Kyle Lawson, Brian Peterson, and
23 Alex Racey; the B squad includes: Michael Agner, Colin Bohan,
24 Joseph Culpepper, John Honnen, Kate Jolly, Cameron Jones,
25 Erik Kuhn, Johnathan Roegge, Sarah Scheerer, Laura Stampf,
26 and Jon Wardell; and
27 WHEREAS, Mrs. Rae Ellen Hopkins, who teaches seventh and
28 eighth grade Humanities Lab, Mrs. Lauren Range, who teaches
29 eighth grade Science, and Ms. Sarah Hopkins, who is a
30 sophomore at Illinois College, coach the team; Sarah was a
31 member of the last Turner Scholastic Bowl team to go to

1 State, placing third; and
2 WHEREAS, Turner is exceptionally proud of the effort
3 these talented young people put forth; they are a credit to
4 their parents and the community; therefore, be it
5 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7 we congratulate the members of the Jonathan Turner Junior
8 High School Scholastic Bowl team on achieving their State
9 Champion status at the 2003 State Scholastic Bowl and we wish
10 them continued success in their future educational endeavors;
11 and be it further
12 RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
13 presented to Dr. Richard Basden, Superintendent of Jonathan
14 Turner Junior High School, Jan Ryan, the Principal of
15 Jonathan Turner Junior High School, and to each member of the
16 Scholastic Bowl team as an expression of our esteem.
