| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of George W. Makela of Waukegan, who passed | 4 | | away on July 15, 2018; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, George Makela was born in Waukegan to Oiva and | 6 | | Edna Makela on August 26, 1922; he was a true Bulldog and | 7 | | graduated from Waukegan High School in 1942; after graduation, | 8 | | he joined the United States Marines, where he became a | 9 | | Sergeant, and served during World War II; years later, he was | 10 | | honored to join fellow World War II veterans on an Honor Flight | 11 | | to Washington, D.C.; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Following the war, George Makela worked at the | 13 | | family store, Makela's Grocery, with his father; he also | 14 | | refereed basketball in Lake County for 15 years;; he later | 15 | | retired from Copley Newspaper as a classified ad manager; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, During retirement, George Makela enjoyed playing | 17 | | golf and meeting his friends at The Sunset House and The Avalon | 18 | | for morning coffee; he and Jean also spent many winters in | 19 | | Ahwatukee, Arizona, where they spent time with their son and | 20 | | his family; he took great pride in his son's accomplishments; | 21 | | and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, George Makela was preceded in death by his parents | 2 | | and his brother-in-law, Len Huber; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, George Makela is survived by his wife of 72 years, | 4 | | Betty Jean; his son, Rob (Kathy) Makela; his grandchildren, | 5 | | Scott (Kelly) Makela, Ted Makela, and Kiirsti (Dan) Kamrath; | 6 | | his great-granddaughters, Kaari and Kamy Makela; his | 7 | | great-grandson, RJ Kamrath; his friends, Clyde and Helen | 8 | | Fawcett, Peggy (T-T) Fawcett, the entire Fawcett family, and | 9 | | the Louis Ross family; therefore, be it
| 10 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | 11 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 12 | | George W. Makela and extend our sincere condolences to his | 13 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | 14 | | further
