| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Margery W. Steele, who passed away on | 4 | | June 20, 2013; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Margery Steele was born on July 17, 1920, in | 6 | | Michigan City, Indiana, to George and Marion (nee Whiteley) | 7 | | Phelan; she graduated from Kingston High School in Kingston, | 8 | | New York, and attended New York City Business College; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Margery Steele worked for the War Department in | 10 | | the Office of Strategic Services, which later became the | 11 | | Central Intelligence Agency; she served in North Africa, Egypt, | 12 | | and Greece; she married Harold Steele on October 12, 1946, in a | 13 | | civil ceremony, followed by a military ceremony in Vienna, | 14 | | Austria on October 13, 1946; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Margery Steele was an active member of First | 16 | | Congregational Church of Peru and a past member of Dover | 17 | | Congregational Church; she participated in other clubs and | 18 | | organizations, including Steele Farms as secretary-treasurer, | 19 | | Dover Congregational Church as a Sunday school teacher, the | 20 | | board of the American Red Cross, the Dover Grade School Board, | 21 | | the Bureau County United Way, and as a Camp Fire Girls Leader; | 22 | | she hosted students and was on the board for the American Field |

| 1 | | Service and the Bureau Valley Business and Professional Women's | 2 | | Club, where she was woman of the year in 1980; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Margery Steele was preceded in death by her | 4 | | parents; her 3 brothers; and her sister; and | 5 | | WHEREAS, Margery Steele is survived by her husband of 67 | 6 | | years, Harold; her children, Greg (Sandra) Steele, Linda (Noel) | 7 | | Hobbs, Becky (Tom) Hall, and Susan (Mike) Teslow; her AFS-USA | 8 | | foreign exchange daughters, Dr. Akke Van der Zijpp and Kyoko | 9 | | (Shinobo) Tanaka; her grandchildren, Kristopher (Dawn) Hall, | 10 | | Alanna (Evan Rapoport) Hobbs, Cpt. Chad (Dr. Michelle) Foreman, | 11 | | Katie (Michael) Baldwin, and Rachel Foreman; her foreign | 12 | | grandchildren, Karin and Jumi Yamada; her great-grandsons, | 13 | | Jacob Foreman and Ieppi Tanaka; and several nieces and nephews; | 14 | | therefore, be it
