| SENATE RESOLUTION
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois | 3 |
| were saddened to learn of the death of Paul Anthony Keller of | 4 |
| Jacksonville on February 17, 2004; and | 5 |
| WHEREAS, He was born November 5, 1919, in Bloomington, the | 6 |
| son of Dr. Alvin Jerome and Nelle Hughes Keller; he married | 7 |
| Dorothy Jane Cobb in 1955 in Jacksonville; and | 8 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Keller attended Bloomington High School and | 9 |
| graduated from St. John's Military Academy in Delafield, | 10 |
| Wisconsin, in 1939 and attended St. Joseph's College in Indiana | 11 |
| for a year; he then worked as a railroad fireman; he entered | 12 |
| the United States Marine Corps in 1944, serving with the 26th | 13 |
| Regiment of the 5th Marine Division, stationed in Honolulu; he | 14 |
| received the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in the Battle of | 15 |
| Iwo Jima; he received a bachelor's degree in education from | 16 |
| Normal Teachers College (now Illinois State University) in 1949 | 17 |
| and a master's degree in education administration in 1950; and | 18 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Keller became a physical education teacher and | 19 |
| basketball and track coach in 1950 at David Prince Junior High | 20 |
| School (now Jonathan Turner Junior High), where his basketball | 21 |
| teams were 280-64 and his track teams had 14 undefeated | 22 |
| seasons, earning three State titles with several individual | 23 |
| State champions; he also managed several area swimming pools | 24 |
| for 21 years, including Nichols Park, Jacksonville Country | 25 |
| Club, and Winchester Public Pool; and | 26 |
| WHEREAS, He served as regional superintendent of schools | 27 |
| from 1970 until his retirement in 1993; he coached many | 28 |
| athletic teams including Elks, Pony, Colt and American Legion | 29 |
| baseball teams, and YMCA softball; he was a starter for many | 30 |
| area swim and track meets; in 1988, he was inducted into the | 31 |
| Jacksonville High School Sports Hall of Fame; and |

| WHEREAS, He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council | 2 |
| 868, the Routt Catholic High School Athletic Boosters Club, the | 3 |
| Jacksonville Kiwanis Club, the Morgan County Democrats, the | 4 |
| Illinois Education Association, the National Education | 5 |
| Association, the Illinois Association of Regional | 6 |
| Superintendents, and the Jacksonville NAACP; and | 7 |
| WHEREAS, The passing of Paul A. Keller will be deeply felt | 8 |
| by many, especially his wife, Dorothy; his four children, Paul | 9 |
| Dirk (wife, Iowa) Keller, Charles Christopher (wife, Leigh Ann) | 10 |
| Keller, Julia Ellen (husband, John) Mangano, and Lisa Marie | 11 |
| Keller; his nine grandchildren; his cousin who was raised in | 12 |
| the family home, Emma Hughes Parker; and numerous nieces, | 13 |
| nephews and cousins; therefore, be it
| 14 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL | 15 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of | 16 |
| Paul A. Keller along with all who knew and loved him and extend | 17 |
| our sincere condolences to his family and friends; and be it | 18 |
| further
| 19 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 20 |
| presented to the family of Paul A. Keller as an expression of | 21 |
| our deepest sympathy.
