1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of
3 the State of Illinois wish to congratulate the citizens of
4 Arlington on the occasion of their sesquicentennial
5 celebration; and
6 WHEREAS, In 1840, Captain Michael Kennedy, a gifted
7 mathematician and engineer who worked as superintendent of
8 the Illinois and Michigan Canal and served as a contractor of
9 the Peru and Galena Railroad, bought the land where the town
10 of Arlington would be located; 13 years later, on December
11 19, 1853, he platted the village and changed the name from
12 Lost Grove to Arlington, after the city in New York that he
13 was from; and
14 WHEREAS, An early settler, Peter Cassidy, laid out the
15 southwest addition to the town in 1854, and various other
16 sections were being claimed which would be additions bearing
17 the names of their owners; the real development of Arlington
18 began with the collapse of the Illinois Michigan Canal and
19 when Mr. Kennedy managed to have the Chicago, Burlington &
20 Quincy Railroad routed through Arlington; and
21 WHEREAS, In 1867, Arlington boasted a population of 1,586
22 people and was home to 3 dry goods stores, 1 grocery store, 1
23 clothing store, 1 hotel, 3 doctors, 3 churches, 2 school
24 buildings, 1 drug store, and a steam mill; in 1901, the first
25 financial institution offered its services when the Arlington
26 Exchange Bank was chartered; and
27 WHEREAS, This year, Arlington will celebrate its
28 sesquicentennial; therefore, be it
29 RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
30 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
31 we congratulate the citizens of Arlington on the occasion of

1 their sesquicentennial celebration; and be it further
2 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3 presented to the city of Arlington as an expression of our
4 respect and esteem.
