| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, In August of 2021, a mass evacuation out of | 3 | | Afghanistan took place; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, On August 26, 2021, during this evacuation at | 5 | | Hamid Karzai International Airport near Kabul, Afghanistan, | 6 | | United States of America service members, acting under orders, | 7 | | were guarding an airport security entrance checkpoint in order | 8 | | to maintain evacuation security and to prevent Afghan | 9 | | civilians from storming the airport; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, The crowd of civilians and their U.S. guards were | 11 | | a target for terrorists; a large explosive device was | 12 | | detonated at the airport, followed by a mass shooting; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, 13 U.S. service members, including 11 members of | 14 | | the United States Marines, one member of the United States | 15 | | Army, and one corpsman of the United States Navy, were killed, | 16 | | and at least eighteen additional United States service members | 17 | | were injured in the 2021 Kabul airport attack; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, At least 169 civilians were killed, including | 19 | | civilians who possessed ties to the United Kingdom, and many | 20 | | others were wounded; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, These service officers and members of the United | 2 | | States armed forces have presented their fellow Americans with | 3 | | a shining example of love, honor, duty, and sacrifice; | 4 | | therefore, be it
| 5 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 6 | | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 7 | | we honor and memorialize the American casualties of the 2021 | 8 | | Kabul airport attack; and be it further
| 9 | | RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be delivered to | 10 | | General David H. Berger, Commandant of the United States | 11 | | Marine Corps, General Mark A. Milley, Chief of Staff of the | 12 | | United States Army and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, | 13 | | and Admiral Michael M. Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations.
