| SENATE RESOLUTION
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois | 3 |
| were saddened to learn of the death of Evans Royce Miller on | 4 |
| April 17, 2004; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Evans Royce Miller was born to Alice Hines Miller | 6 |
| and Minor Townsend on May 5, 1932, in Bowling Green, Kentucky; | 7 |
| and
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, In 1950, he graduated from State Street High | 9 |
| School in Bowling Green, Kentucky; between studying and working | 10 |
| before and after school, he enjoyed playing basketball and pool | 11 |
| and listening to the blues; he also developed an interest in | 12 |
| politics after working in a Kentucky election; and
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, After graduating from Eulon Barber College in | 14 |
| 1951, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he | 15 |
| served in the Korean War as an Airman First Class until he was | 16 |
| honorably discharged in 1955; and
| 17 |
| WHEREAS, He married Thelma Jo Waller on March 23, 1957; | 18 |
| they moved to Chicago where their two children, Steven Royce | 19 |
| and Sheila Ann, were born; and
| 20 |
| WHEREAS, He moved his family to Markham in 1963 where he | 21 |
| joined Christ Temple Community Baptist Church and began | 22 |
| employment with the City of Markham in the Public Works | 23 |
| Department; and
| 24 |
| WHEREAS, He joined numerous civic and civil rights | 25 |
| organizations, including the Cub and Boy Scouts, Little League | 26 |
| baseball, Markham Park District, Operation PUSH, NAACP South | 27 |
| Suburban Branch, National Urban League, School District 152 1/2 | 28 |
| PTA, American Legion Post 828, and many others; he always | 29 |
| wanted to be at the forefront of community issues; and |

| WHEREAS, Mr. Miller believed he could make a difference, so | 2 |
| he decided to run for political office; he was elected Alderman | 3 |
| of Ward 1 in 1971 and 1975; and | 4 |
| WHEREAS, In 1973, he became President of the Markham Roller | 5 |
| Rink, Inc., a position he held until he departed this life; his | 6 |
| business has served as "the place" for recreation in | 7 |
| metropolitan Chicago; and | 8 |
| WHEREAS, In 1985 he was elected Mayor of the City of | 9 |
| Markham and he was re-elected in 1989, 1993, and 1997; under | 10 |
| his leadership, the City of Markham prospered; and | 11 |
| WHEREAS, Until the end, he remained devoted to his family, | 12 |
| friends, business, and the City of Markham; and | 13 |
| WHEREAS, The passing of Evans Royce Miller will be deeply | 14 |
| felt by many, especially his wife, Thelma; his son, Steven R. | 15 |
| (Stephanie J.) Miller; his daughter, Sheila A. (Steve) Baker; | 16 |
| his four grandchildren, Stacie D. Miller, Simone E. Miller, | 17 |
| Cameron J. Ellison, and Kellie N. Baker; his twin sister, Eva | 18 |
| J. (Jack) Withrow; his three brothers, Otha D. (Virginia) | 19 |
| Miller, Percy (Inez) Miller, and Cecil (Maude) Miller; his | 20 |
| three sisters-in-law, Sarah Waller, Jean (Albert) Waller, and | 21 |
| Johnnie Mae (James) Waller; and a host of nieces, nephews, and | 22 |
| many true and wonderful friends; and | 23 |
| WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his sisters and | 24 |
| brothers, Dora (John) Booker, George Anna (Golden) Wade, Ruby | 25 |
| (Felix) Perkins, Sarah (Andrew) McGriff, Elisha (Dora) Miller, | 26 |
| Clarence Miller, and Paul Miller; therefore, be it
| 27 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL | 28 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of | 29 |
| Evan Royce Miller along with all who knew and loved him and |
|

| extend our sincere condolences to his friends, family, and | 2 |
| community; and be it further
| 3 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 4 |
| presented to the family of Evans Royce Miller as an expression | 5 |
| of our deepest sympathy.
