| 2 | | WHEREAS, Rotary International is a global network of 1.2 | 3 | | million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who | 4 | | unite and take action to create lasting change in communities | 5 | | across the globe; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, The Rotary's motto, Service Above Self, inspires | 7 | | members to provide humanitarian service, follow high ethical | 8 | | standards, and promote goodwill and peace in the world; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, In 1985, Rotary launched PolioPlus to immunize the | 10 | | children of the world against polio; in 1988, the organization | 11 | | helped establish the Global Polio Eradication Initiative; | 12 | | partners in this initiative include the World Health | 13 | | Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and | 14 | | Prevention, UNICEF, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; | 15 | | and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Since 1988, polio cases have dropped by 99.9 | 17 | | percent, and the world stands on the threshold of eradicating | 18 | | the disease; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Rotary is working to raise an additional $50 | 20 | | million per year, which would be leveraged for maximum impact | 21 | | by an additional $100 million annually from the Bill & Melinda |

| 2 | | WHEREAS, These efforts are providing much-needed | 3 | | operational support, medical staff, laboratory equipment, and | 4 | | educational materials for health workers and parents; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, In addition, Rotary has played a major role in | 6 | | decisions by government partners to contribute more than $8 | 7 | | billion to the effort; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Throughout the State, there are over 11,700 | 9 | | Rotarians in more than 330 clubs that sponsor service projects | 10 | | to address critical issues in their local communities and | 11 | | abroad, including poverty, disease, hunger, illiteracy, and | 12 | | the environment; therefore, be it
| 13 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 14 | | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 15 | | we declare October 24, 2019 as World Polio Day in the State of | 16 | | Illinois; and be it further
| 17 | | RESOLVED, that suitable copies of this resolution be | 18 | | presented to Rotary International as an expression of our | 19 | | esteem and respect.
