| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois | 3 |
| were saddened to learn of the untimely passing of Virgil P. | 4 |
| Vergara on February 1, 2004; and | 5 |
| WHEREAS, Virgil P. Vergara is the eldest, loving son of the | 6 |
| late Cecilio and Julieta Vergara; he was born in Ibaan, | 7 |
| Batangas, Philippines on March 31, 1945, and was raised in | 8 |
| Solano, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines; and
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Vergara was an intelligent and charismatic | 10 |
| individual who consistently excelled in his academic | 11 |
| performance; he was an award-winning debater and orator and was | 12 |
| well-known for his magnetic personality; and
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, He attended the University of Santo Thomas in | 14 |
| Manila, Philippines, graduating summa cum laude from the | 15 |
| College of Commerce with a Bachelor of Science in Business | 16 |
| Administration on June 30, 1964, further achieving the | 17 |
| distinction of becoming a Certified Public Accountant on | 18 |
| February 17, 1966; he worked for several years as an auditor | 19 |
| and accountant for numerous companies in the Philippines; and
| 20 |
| WHEREAS, At the age of 26, he was the first member of his | 21 |
| family to immigrate to the United States from the Philippines | 22 |
| arriving in Chicago to begin his new life in pursuit of greater | 23 |
| opportunities for himself and his family; and
| 24 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Vergara met his future wife, Maria "Sunny", | 25 |
| the only daughter of the late Veremundo M. and Lydia T. Magno | 26 |
| in Chicago; the couple was married on March 30, 1974 at St. | 27 |
| Francis Xavier Church (now Resurrection Parish) in Chicago; and
| 28 |
| WHEREAS, On May 24, 1977, Mr. Vergara took his oath of U.S. | 29 |
| citizenship and became naturalized as a citizen of the United |

| States of America at a ceremony held in the United States | 2 |
| District Court for the Northern District of Illinois; and
| 3 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Vergara was a parishioner of Our Lady of the | 4 |
| Wayside Catholic Church and St. James Catholic Church in | 5 |
| Arlington Heights; and | 6 |
| WHEREAS, Virgil P. Vergara was a dedicated father and | 7 |
| loving husband, who with his wife, "Sunny", instilled in his | 8 |
| four daughters the value of having a strong commitment to one's | 9 |
| family, the desire to learn, a dedication to seeking higher | 10 |
| education, and a deep pride in embracing their Filipino | 11 |
| heritage and cultural values; and
| 12 |
| WHEREAS, He enjoyed international travel, learning about | 13 |
| and experiencing new cultures with his wife and was an active | 14 |
| supporter of numerous Filipino-American civic and cultural | 15 |
| organizations in the Chicagoland area, including the Solano, | 16 |
| Nueva Vizcaya Association of Illinois; the Batangas | 17 |
| Association of the Midwest; and the Filipino Civil Rights | 18 |
| Advocates, Chicago Chapter, for which he participated in | 19 |
| numerous community forums, fundraising efforts, and lobbying | 20 |
| activities to help build awareness for the cause of Filipino | 21 |
| World War II veterans who were denied their U.S. veteran | 22 |
| benefits, including contacting members of Congress to seek | 23 |
| their co-sponsorship for federal legislation to fully restore | 24 |
| U.S. veteran benefits to Filipino World War II veterans who | 25 |
| served in the U.S. Armed Forces; and
| 26 |
| WHEREAS, He had a long and distinguished career as a | 27 |
| successful financial planner and insurance representative, | 28 |
| serving the financial and insurance needs of Chicagoland's | 29 |
| Filipino-American community, attaining distinction in his | 30 |
| profession and receiving numerous awards, including membership | 31 |
| to the President's Club in 1993 for excellence in performance | 32 |
| and for being one of the top producers; and in 1995 and 1997, |

| he was selected to participate in the Royal Blue Business | 2 |
| Convention, which is reserved only for the top producers | 3 |
| nationwide; and
| 4 |
| WHEREAS, Virgil P. Vergara was a loving and supportive | 5 |
| father who made great sacrifices to help his family succeed; | 6 |
| who during his lifetime was able to witness numerous | 7 |
| graduations and academic awards ceremonies of his four beloved | 8 |
| daughters; and
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, Virgil P. Vergara's untimely passing was deeply | 10 |
| felt by his family and many friends, most especially by his | 11 |
| beloved wife, "Sunny"; his loving daughters, Vanessa, Vivika, | 12 |
| Melissa, and Rowena; his son-in-law, Joseph Seliga; his mother, | 13 |
| Julieta; his brothers, Ernesto, Edilberto, Manolito, Pedro; | 14 |
| and his sister, Delia; therefore, be it
| 15 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL | 16 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of | 17 |
| Virgil P. Vergara along with all who knew and loved him and | 18 |
| extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends; and | 19 |
| be it further
| 20 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 21 |
| presented to the family of Virgil P. Vergara as an expression | 22 |
| of our deepest sympathy for their loss.
