| SENATE RESOLUTION
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois | 3 |
| were saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Mina Rea Perlow of | 4 |
| Downers Grove on April 19, 2004; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Mina Rea was born on July 14, 1909 in Harrodsburg, | 6 |
| Kentucky, the daughter of the late Samuel Beriah and Violet | 7 |
| Carter Jones; and | 8 |
| WHEREAS, She attended Centre College in Danville, | 9 |
| Kentucky, where she received a bachelor's degree in chemistry | 10 |
| and was the first Phi Beta Kappa recipient from that college; | 11 |
| she later went on to get a master's degree in chemistry from | 12 |
| Pennsylvania State University and a doctorate in chemistry from | 13 |
| the University of Chicago in 1941; it was during graduate | 14 |
| school when she met her husband, whom she married a few months | 15 |
| later; they recently celebrated their 63rd wedding | 16 |
| anniversary; and | 17 |
| WHEREAS, While working on her thesis at University of | 18 |
| Chicago, she did research on the chemistry of lithium hydrides, | 19 |
| work which turned out to have practical application in the | 20 |
| making of military equipments, such as airplane engines and | 21 |
| radios; and | 22 |
| WHEREAS, During World War II, Dr. Perlow and her husband | 23 |
| lived in Washington D.C., where she worked at the War | 24 |
| Production Board; after the war, the couple returned to the | 25 |
| Chicago area, and she became a part-time consultant chemist at | 26 |
| Argonne National Laboratory near Downers Grove, where for many | 27 |
| years she worked with her husband, assisting him and other | 28 |
| scientists in various projects; and | 29 |
| WHEREAS, A faithful Downers Grove resident since 1953, she | 30 |
| was active in the League of Women Voters; in her retirement, |

| she was also an enthusiastic sailor, a sport she frequently | 2 |
| shared with family and friends; and | 3 |
| WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. Mina Rea Perlow will be deeply | 4 |
| felt by many, especially her husband, Dr. Gilbert Perlow; her | 5 |
| brother David C. Jones; and three generations of nieces | 6 |
| nephews, and cousins; and | 7 |
| WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by five sisters and one | 8 |
| brother; therefore, be it
| 9 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL | 10 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of | 11 |
| Dr. Mina Rea Perlow along with all who knew and loved her and | 12 |
| extend our sincere condolences to her friends and family; and | 13 |
| be it further

| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 15 |
| presented to the family of Dr. Mina Rea Perlow as an expression | 16 |
| of our deepest sympathy.
