| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives wish to commemorate the historic 1974-1975 Red | 4 | | Bud Musketeers women's volleyball team; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, After the passage of Title IX in 1972, the | 6 | | Musketeers had only played one season when the girls from the | 7 | | school of 400 began their historic 37 and 1 season; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, The Musketeer's athletic conference, the Cahokia | 9 | | Conference, voted to forbid any women's volleyball team in the | 10 | | conference from playing in the 1975 state tournament; and | 11 | | WHEREAS, The Musketeers, led by their intrepid 27-year-old | 12 | | coach, Sandy Griffin, and with the support of the local school | 13 | | board and school administration, defied the conference and | 14 | | entered the state tournament; and | 15 | | WHEREAS, At the close of an undefeated 17 and 0 regular | 16 | | season, the Musketeers destroyed the regional championship | 17 | | field, completing the title match in a dizzying 12 minutes; | 18 | | and | 19 | | WHEREAS, The Musketeers relied heavily on the "Red Bud | 20 | | Six", Diann Schrader, Deb Stamm, Paula Snyder, Cindy Guebert, |

| 1 | | Meg Gross, and Kim R. Liefer, during their ensuing state | 2 | | tournament run; and | 3 | | WHEREAS, The Musketeers went undefeated in the sectional | 4 | | championships and handily beat Granite City South in the | 5 | | super-sectionals; and | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Musketeers beat larger programs at schools | 7 | | such as Champaign Central and Lincoln, starting their state | 8 | | tournament bid at 24 and 0; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Although the team was finally eliminated by New | 10 | | Trier East, a Chicago school boasting a roster of Olympic | 11 | | hopefuls and a student body over 10 times larger than Red Bud, | 12 | | the impressive run against schools of all sizes from across | 13 | | the State sure "showed Charlie", a local sports reporter who | 14 | | at the beginning of the season mentioned those schools with | 15 | | Olympic hopefuls, writing "stop dreaming Red Bud"; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, The Musketeers never stopped dreaming and, more | 17 | | importantly, never stopped pursuing excellence on the court | 18 | | and, in doing so, cemented their claim to the title of best | 19 | | Southern Illinois team their sport has seen; and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, On the 25th of February, 2023, Red Bud will honor | 21 | | the 1974-1975 Musketeers; therefore, be it

| 1 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 2 | | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 3 | | we commemorate the 1974-1975 Red Bud Musketeers women's | 4 | | volleyball team, acknowledging their tenacity off the court to | 5 | | demand the right to compete at the highest level as well as | 6 | | their grit and determination to earn that right, and thank | 7 | | them for serving as an example of these admirable traits for | 8 | | nearly 50 years of women competitors; and be it further
| 9 | | RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | 10 | | presented to Red Bud High School, Coach Sandy Griffin, Diann | 11 | | Schrader, Deb Stamm, Paula Snyder, Cindy Guebert, Meg Gross, | 12 | | and Kim R. Liefer as an expression of our respect and esteem | 13 | | for breaking ground in sports for all young women in Southern | 14 | | Illinois.
