| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Carroll W. Dukes, who passed away on | 4 | | November 13, 2013; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Carroll Dukes was born on September 9, 1930 near | 6 | | Collison; his parents were William J. and Lily (nee Hess) | 7 | | Dukes; he married Mary Denzer on January 1, 1982; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, After graduating from Rossville High School in | 9 | | 1948, Carroll Dukes entered the United States Air Force, where | 10 | | he spent 30 months stationed in Japan prior to his discharge in | 11 | | 1952; after his discharge, he attended and graduated from | 12 | | Eastern Illinois University before attending Dickinson School | 13 | | of Law, an adjunct of Penn State University, where he graduated | 14 | | in 1958; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, After graduating from law school, Carroll Dukes | 16 | | became an associate with the law firm of Sebat, Swanson, Banks, | 17 | | and Jones in Danville and shortly thereafter became a partner; | 18 | | in 1967, he and his associate, William Frivogel, opened C.W. | 19 | | Dukes Law Offices; in 1969, he was joined by John O'Rourke, and | 20 | | the firm of Dukes, O'Rourke, Stewart, Martin, and Ryan grew by | 21 | | another 8 attorneys; he retired in 2000 at the age of 70 from | 22 | | the firm currently known as Dukes, Ryan, Meyer, and Freed; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Carroll Dukes was a life member of the American | 2 | | Legion Spears-Dukes post in Rossville; he served on the | 3 | | Danville School Board from 1967 to 1970 and participated in | 4 | | various community functions over the years; he was a past | 5 | | member of St. James United Methodist Church, where he served as | 6 | | chairman of the administrative board and executive committee; | 7 | | he and his wife were also members of the Second Church of | 8 | | Christ in Danville for 25 years; and | 9 | | WHEREAS, Carroll Dukes was a member of the American Bar | 10 | | Association, the Illinois Bar Association, the Illinois | 11 | | Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the American Trial | 12 | | Lawyers Association, and the Vermilion County Bar Association; | 13 | | and | 14 | | WHEREAS, Carroll Dukes enjoyed golfing, fishing, reading, | 15 | | and following Illini football and basketball, as well as | 16 | | cheering on the Chicago Bears and Chicago Bulls; and | 17 | | WHEREAS, Carroll Dukes was preceded in death by his | 18 | | parents; his first wife, Martha; his brother, William J. Dukes; | 19 | | and his sisters, Norma Miller, Mabre Seymour, and Laverna | 20 | | (June) LaMar; and | 21 | | WHEREAS, Carroll Dukes is survived by his wife, Mary; his |

| 1 | | sons, Steven W. (Irma) Dukes and William B. Dukes; his | 2 | | stepchildren, Daryn (Julie) Denzer, Daryl (Tonia) Denzer, and | 3 | | Shannon (Nick) Schneider; his 9 grandchildren; his 11 | 4 | | great-grandchildren; and his many nieces and nephews; | 5 | | therefore, be it
| 6 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | 7 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his | 8 | | family and friends, mourn the passing of Carroll W. Dukes; and | 9 | | be it further
| 10 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 11 | | presented to the family of Carroll Dukes as an expression of | 12 | | our sympathy.
