| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Steven G. "Steve" "Mazz" Mazzarella of | 4 | | Naperville, who passed away on January 12, 2019; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Steve Mazzarella was born in LaGrange to Joseph | 6 | | and Dolores Mazzarella on November 30, 1956; he attended St. | 7 | | Cletus Grade School and graduated from Lyons Township High | 8 | | School in 1974; he received his Bachelor of Arts in Education | 9 | | from Western Illinois University and his master's degree in | 10 | | education from the University of Illinois; he married Lesly A. | 11 | | Sartori on August 12, 1984; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, After working as a fireman for the LaGrange Fire | 13 | | Department, Steve Mazzarella began a 30-year teaching career at | 14 | | Naperville North High School, where he taught health and | 15 | | coached springboard diving; as a teacher, he incorporated a | 16 | | focus on mental health; he excelled at helping high school | 17 | | athletes prepare for the internal challenges of diving and | 18 | | helped them build "mental stamina"; after he retired from | 19 | | teaching, he worked as a substitute to stay connected; he also | 20 | | worked as a pool manager at the Farmstead Swim & Racquet Club | 21 | | in Naperville during the summers; and
| 22 | | WHEREAS, Steve Mazzarella was a mentor with Operation |

| 1 | | Snowball for many years, where he continued to promote student | 2 | | well being; he was a member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic | 3 | | Church in Naperville; he enjoyed water skiing, running, and | 4 | | spending time at the family cottage in Colon, Michigan; he ran | 5 | | the Boston, Chicago, and Naperville Marathons; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Steve Mazzarella's purpose was to treat everyone | 7 | | with love and acceptance, to live life with passion, and to | 8 | | show others how they could do the same; he will be remembered | 9 | | by his family, friends, students, and colleagues as a person | 10 | | who loved life and tried to serve others every day; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Steve Mazzarella was the beloved husband of Lesly, | 12 | | the loving father of Patrick (fiancee, Liza Zaydes) Mazzarella, | 13 | | Megan (Ben) Coleman, and Matthew Mazzarella, the adored | 14 | | grandfather of Emma Nicole Mazzarella and Gwen Carmella | 15 | | Coleman, the devoted son of Joseph and Dolores Mazzarella, the | 16 | | dear brother of Joseph (Ann) Mazzarella and the late Donna | 17 | | (Tom) Wood, the son-in-law of the late Daniel J. and Joanne | 18 | | Marie Sartori, the brother-in-law of Amy (Gary) Williams, Jill | 19 | | (Frank) Knight, Dana Sartori, and Meredith (Ted) Manikas, and | 20 | | the fond nephew, uncle, great-uncle, godfather, and friend of | 21 | | many; therefore, be it
