| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Irene | 4 | | H. Brodie, who passed away on January 18, 2018; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Brodie was born in
Armorel, Arkansas to Ira E. | 6 | | and Ressie Elder Hale on February 27, 1931; she was educated in | 7 | | the Missouri Public School System and attended Lincoln | 8 | | University in Jefferson City, Missouri
before transferring to | 9 | | Chicago Teacher's College (Chicago State University), where | 10 | | she attained
her Bachelor of Education; she then attended the | 11 | | University of Chicago, where she
attained her Master of Science | 12 | | Degree, and Nova University (Nova Southeastern University),
| 13 | | where she was awarded her Doctorate of Education; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Brodie served as a 6th grade teacher at Kellar | 15 | | Jr. High School
in Robbins and taught English at Richards High | 16 | | School in Oak Lawn; she later became assistant
principal at | 17 | | Turner Elementary School and Professor
of Communications at | 18 | | Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, ultimately | 19 | | becoming Dean of Basic Education/Academic Skills at Moraine | 20 | | Valley Community College; and
| 21 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Brodie was appointed village clerk for Robbins | 22 | | and
served in that position for 12 years; she went on to serve |

| 1 | | as the mayor of Robbins for 24 years from 1989 to 2013; she | 2 | | served as the Secretary of the National Conference of Black | 3 | | Mayors
and was a member of both the South Suburban Mayor's | 4 | | Association and President Bill
Clinton's Environmental | 5 | | Think-Tank Group; and | 6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Brodie was a member of numerous civic and | 7 | | community organizations including serving as president of the | 8 | | board of The Libra
School; she was a member of The Ada S. | 9 | | McKinley Community Services, Inc. Board of Directors, the Blue | 10 | | Island Rotary Club, and the Chicago Southland Chamber of | 11 | | Commerce; she was also a member of the Moraine Valley Community | 12 | | College Foundation
and was recognized as one of the college's | 13 | | most notable benefactors; she was a member of the Great Hope | 14 | | Missionary
Baptist Church in Robbins; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Brodie was preceded in death by her parents; | 16 | | her sisters, Ethel H. Banks and Rev. Dr.
Evelyn H. Meachum; her | 17 | | husband, J.E. Brodie; and her daughter, Jeraye Brodie; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Brodie is survived by her sister, Bertha | 19 | | (George) Buckner; her niece, Lori Buckner; her nephew, Byron | 20 | | Buckner and his wife, Cheptoo Kositany-Buckner;
her | 21 | | great-nieces, Chebet and Maya Buckner; and many other relatives | 22 | | and friends; therefore, be it

| 1 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 2 | | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | 3 | | mourn the passing of Dr. Irene H. Brodie, and extend our | 4 | | sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew | 5 | | and loved her; and be it further
| 6 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 7 | | presented to the family of Dr. Brodie as an expression of our | 8 | | deepest sympathy.
