| 2 | | WHEREAS, Jane Addams was born in Cedarville on September 6, | 3 | | 1860; she became a leading, profound voice in civic | 4 | | responsibility, education, and legislation and a promoter of | 5 | | peace; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Jane Addams was valedictorian of Rockford Female | 7 | | Seminary in 1881 and received her bachelor's degree in 1882; | 8 | | and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, In 1889, along with Miss Ellen G. Starr, Jane | 10 | | Addams opened Hull House for the underprivileged in Chicago; | 11 | | Hull House hosted up to 2,000 people every week and produced | 12 | | numerous impactful programs within its walls, including an art | 13 | | gallery, employment bureau, a boarding club for girls, and | 14 | | other programs; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, The purpose of Hull House was to provide a center | 16 | | for a higher civic and social life, to institute and maintain | 17 | | educational and philanthropic enterprises, and to investigate | 18 | | and improve the industrial districts of Chicago; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Jane Addams created significant opportunities for | 20 | | immigrants, and, being an ardent feminist by philosophy, she | 21 | | encouraged women to work to obtain their right to vote; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, In 1906, Jane Addams gave a course of lectures at | 2 | | the University of Wisconsin; the following year, she published | 3 | | these lectures under the title Newer Ideals of Peace; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Jane Addams was appointed to Chicago's Board of | 5 | | Education in 1905 and served as chairman of the School | 6 | | Management Committee; in 1908, she was one of the founders of | 7 | | the Chicago School of Civics and Philanthropy; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Jane Addams broke down barriers and persevered in | 9 | | the face of resistance; she established many milestones, | 10 | | including being the first woman to receive an honorary degree | 11 | | from Yale University in 1910, founding the Women's | 12 | | International League for Peace and Freedom in 1919, and her | 13 | | acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, In the United States of America, Jane Addams | 15 | | worked to help the poor and to stop the use of children as | 16 | | industrial laborers; therefore, be it
| 17 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 18 | | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 19 | | we recognize Jane Addams's role as a philanthropist, | 20 | | humanitarian, sociologist and president of an international | 21 | | organization and honor her for her efforts to promote peace; |

| 2 | | RESOLVED, That we acknowledge Jane Addams as a deserving | 3 | | daughter in the State of Illinois and therefore declare | 4 | | September 6, 2020 as the Jane Addams Day of Service.
