| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, Platon Deliyannis was a brilliant mathematics | 3 |
| scholar, whose contributions to academia were exceeded only by | 4 |
| his love and devotion to his wife, children, and grandchildren; | 5 |
| and
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, Platon Deliyannis was born on August 21, 1931, in | 7 |
| Athens, Greece; his parents were Constantine and Synodia | 8 |
| (Korbeti) Deliyannis; and
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, Platon Deliyannis received a degree in electrical | 10 |
| and mechanical engineering from the prestigious National | 11 |
| Metsovion Polytechnic University in Athens in 1954 and his | 12 |
| Doctorate of Mathematics from the University of Chicago in | 13 |
| 1963; and
| 14 |
| WHEREAS, From 1966 to 1969, Platon Deliyannis and his | 15 |
| family moved back to Athens, Greece, where he served as the | 16 |
| Director of the Center for Advanced Studies in Physics of the | 17 |
| Nuclear Research Centre Demokritos to consider the peaceful | 18 |
| uses of nuclear energy; and
| 19 |
| WHEREAS, In 1969, Platon Deliyannis and his family moved | 20 |
| back to the United States, settling in Deerfield, where he | 21 |
| served as a Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology |

| for 32 years and as Professor Emeritus for the following 9 | 2 |
| years; and
| 3 |
| WHEREAS, During his career, Platon Deliyannis was a widely | 4 |
| respected scholar in the international mathematics community, | 5 |
| especially for his research in measure theory and functional | 6 |
| analysis, and was particularly noted for his pioneering | 7 |
| research in quantum logics and the mathematical foundations of | 8 |
| quantum theory; and
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, Platon Deliyannis was active in the Greek Orthodox | 10 |
| Church; he was a member of the Sts. Peter and Paul Greek | 11 |
| Orthodox Church for 29 years and the Ascension of our Lord | 12 |
| Greek Orthodox Church for the last 10 years; and
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, Platon Deliyannis was a cultured and enlightened | 14 |
| man who was a passionate fan of classical music; he played the | 15 |
| piano and classical guitar and regularly attended the symphony | 16 |
| and opera; he was an avid reader; he enjoyed cooking and | 17 |
| entertaining with friends; he travelled to virtually every | 18 |
| country in Europe, as well as China, Canada, and 39 U.S. | 19 |
| states; he also enjoyed woodworking and building bookcases and | 20 |
| other furniture; and
| 21 |
| WHEREAS, Platon Deliyannis was a kind and gentle man of the | 22 |
| highest integrity, who had a robust sense of humor, a loving |

| demeanor, and a genuine zest for life; and | 2 |
| WHEREAS, Platon Deliyannis placed above all else his | 3 |
| devotion to his beloved family, including his wife Virginia | 4 |
| (Revidi) Deliyannis, their children, Constantine Deliyannis | 5 |
| and Anny (Deliyannis) Gary, and their grandchildren, Alex, | 6 |
| Harry, Simon, and Zoe, all of whom survive him and who loved | 7 |
| him dearly; therefore, be it
| 8 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL | 9 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that that we mourn the | 10 |
| passing of Platon Constantine Deliyannis.
