| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois | 3 |
| learned with sadness of the death of Sam Alschuler of Aurora on | 4 |
| Sunday, July 2, 2006; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, He was born on June 16, 1913, in Aurora to | 6 |
| Benjamin P. and Lillian Alschuler; he graduated from East | 7 |
| Aurora High School and began working as an attorney for the | 8 |
| Alschuler, Funkey, Loats, and Pilmer law firm after graduating | 9 |
| from the University of Chicago Law School in 1935 at the age of | 10 |
| 21; and
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, His family was a key part in the development of | 12 |
| Aurora for almost 150 years, going back to 1858, when his | 13 |
| grandfather and grandmother immigrated from Germany; his | 14 |
| family was intertwined with the legal, political, business, and | 15 |
| social fabric of the city, playing a key role in the cities' | 16 |
| development from the original building of Stolp Island to the | 17 |
| construction of the Fox Valley Center; and
| 18 |
| WHEREAS, He retired in the late 1990s after practicing law | 19 |
| for more than 60 years, making it the first time since 1879 | 20 |
| that a family member was not a partner at the law firm; and
| 21 |
| WHEREAS, He held numerous posts within his community, | 22 |
| including corporation counsel for the city of Aurora, president | 23 |
| of the Chamber of Commerce, president of the Community Chest, | 24 |
| and was a 25-year member of the Planning Commission; he was a | 25 |
| member of the Copley Memorial Hospital Board from 1940 to 1990; | 26 |
| he was president of the Easter Seal Rehabilitation Center for | 27 |
| southern Kane, Kendall, and Dekalb counties from 1945 to 1952 | 28 |
| and director from 1943 to 1990; he was a member of the Rotary | 29 |
| Club of Aurora from 1962 until his death and served as | 30 |
| president in 1970-71; he was a member of the American Legion | 31 |
| and served in the United States Army in 1945; and

| WHEREAS, The passing of Sam Alschuler has been deeply felt | 2 |
| by many; therefore, be it
| 3 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL | 4 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 5 |
| Sam Alschuler, and we extend our sincere condolences to his | 6 |
| family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | 7 |
| further
| 8 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 9 |
| presented to his family as an expression of our deepest | 10 |
| sympathy.
