| 2 | | WHEREAS, Moses Montefiore Congregation is one of the | 3 | | oldest Jewish congregations in continual operation in the | 4 | | State of Illinois; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Moses Montefiore Congregation was formed in May | 6 | | of 1882 at the downtown Bloomington B'Nai B'rith Hall; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Moses Montefiore Congregation's first service was | 8 | | held on Rosh Hashanah in 1882; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, The early members of Moses Montefiore | 10 | | Congregation raised funds to erect a temple; at a meeting held | 11 | | on April 6, 1883, Maik Livingston offered a donation of $100 | 12 | | toward the building of the temple provided the congregation | 13 | | was named after Sir Moses Montefiore, who was a Jewish | 14 | | philanthropist living in England; the offer was accepted, and | 15 | | the first temple building was completed in 1889; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, As Moses Montefiore Congregation grew larger, a | 17 | | new building was required; the new building, located at 102 | 18 | | Robinhood Lane in Bloomington, was completed in 1959, and the | 19 | | congregation has remained at this location since then; and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Moses Montefiore Congregation has served the |

| 1 | | Jewish population in Central Illinois for 140 years; its | 2 | | members have been active participants and leaders in the | 3 | | Bloomington/Normal area, including public service as a mayor | 4 | | of Bloomington, as McLean County Board members, and as circuit | 5 | | court judges; Sigmund Livingston, who grew up in Bloomington, | 6 | | was one of the founders of the Anti-Defamation League, and | 7 | | many members have been deeply involved in social justice | 8 | | activities; early members were merchants, physicians, and | 9 | | lawyers; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Moses Montefiore Congregation supports a | 11 | | religious school and the Jewish Cemetery, which has been in | 12 | | existence since 1856; for more than 50 years, the congregation | 13 | | held a Jewish Food Fair, which was widely appreciated by the | 14 | | larger community of Bloomington/Normal, and it also offers | 15 | | cultural and education programs to its members and to the | 16 | | community at large; therefore, be it
| 17 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 18 | | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 19 | | we congratulate Moses Montefiore Congregation for 140 years of | 20 | | service to families and communities in central Illinois; and | 21 | | be it further
