| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Carl | 4 | | Planinc of Carterville, who passed away on March 7, 2014; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Carl Planinc was born on October 29, 1919 in | 6 | | Johnston City to John and Barbara (nee Golightly) Planinc; he | 7 | | graduated from Johnston City High School in 1937 and joined the | 8 | | Civilian Conservation Corps, helping build Grant City State | 9 | | Park; he married Virginia May Cooksey on April 26, 1941 and | 10 | | served in the United States Army during World War II as a tank | 11 | | driver; after the war, he earned his Bachelor of Science and | 12 | | Master of Science from Southern Illinois University (SIU) in | 13 | | 1950 and 1951 respectively; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Carl Planinc was a longtime educator and | 15 | | administrator in Southern Illinois; he taught 7th grade English | 16 | | for 3 years in Cobden and then served as teacher, principal, | 17 | | and superintendent at Johnston City High School over the next | 18 | | several years; he then took the position of Education | 19 | | Television Coordinator at SIU and was instrumental in | 20 | | developing SIU-Tv Channel 8; after taking some time to complete | 21 | | his Doctorate at Indiana University, he returned to SIU to | 22 | | teach education graduate courses; after 13 years back at SIU, | 23 | | he left to become the Associate Dean of Continuing Education at |

| 1 | | John A. Logan College for 8 years before retiring; and
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Carl Planinc volunteered extensively in his | 3 | | community; he served as Chairman of the Big Muddy Community | 4 | | Action Agency, as Chairman of the March of Dimes, as President | 5 | | of the Johnston City Rotary Club, as Carterville Precinct | 6 | | Committeeman, as a Southern at 150 Committeeman, and as Senior | 7 | | Vice-Commander of the local Chapter for Disabled American | 8 | | Veterans; in 2009, he was selected as a Leader Among Us by The | 9 | | Southern Illinoisan; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Carl Planinc had a love of aviation and | 11 | | contributed to the field by serving as a board member for the | 12 | | Williamson County Airport Authority for 40 years, serving time | 13 | | as both Chairman and Vice-Chairman; he was elected to the | 14 | | Illinois Aviation Hall of Fame in 2012; and | 15 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Carl Planinc was preceded in death by his | 16 | | parents; his daughter, Carolyn Sue Blewett; his brothers, | 17 | | Johnny, Billy, and Frank "Runt" Planinc; and his sisters, | 18 | | Esther Coulson and Mary Rose Brymer; and
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Carl Planinc is survived by his wife of 72 | 20 | | years, Virginia; his sister, Violet Mayer; his grandson, Peyton | 21 | | (Kelly) Blewett; his great-grandson, Brandon Blewett; and many | 22 | | nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

| 1 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 2 | | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 3 | | we mourn the passing of Dr. Carl Planinc, and extend our | 4 | | sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew | 5 | | and loved him; and be it further
| 6 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 7 | | presented to the family of Dr. Carl Planinc as an expression of | 8 | | our deepest sympathy.
