| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Bessie | 4 | | Mae Luckett, who passed away on September 1, 2022; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Bessie Luckett was born to Lonnie Jane Burks | 6 | | Luckett and Eddie Davis Luckett in Harperville, Mississippi on | 7 | | July 20, 1939; her family moved to Jackson, Mississippi in | 8 | | 1949, where she graduated from Lanier High School in 1956; her | 9 | | family moved to Chicago in 1960; she earned her associate's | 10 | | degree in Liberal Arts from Kennedy King College in 1991; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Bessie Luckett volunteered as a candy striper at | 12 | | St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Chicago in 1962; she later became | 13 | | nutritionist supervisor of the hospital's Dietary Department | 14 | | in 1964; she dedicated 35 years of service to St. Elizabeth's; | 15 | | and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Bessie Luckett was extremely dedicated to her | 17 | | community, serving as president of the 800 E. 88th | 18 | | Place/Dauphin Avenue Civic Organization and coordinator of the | 19 | | Beautification Committee for many years; and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, Bessie Luckett attended Midway Missionary Baptist | 21 | | Church in Harperville, Mississippi as a child; she became a |

| 1 | | member of China Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson, | 2 | | Mississippi after her high school graduation; she became a | 3 | | member of Liberty Baptist Church in Chicago in the 1960s, | 4 | | where she served as a member of the original Official Greeters | 5 | | and Unity Circle Club; she also became involved with teaching | 6 | | the intermediate union in the Baptist Training Union; later in | 7 | | life, she became a member of New Bethlehem #4 Missionary | 8 | | Baptist Church, where she assisted with the pantry and | 9 | | costuming children during productions, and she participated in | 10 | | Sunday school; she was also a member of the church's weekly | 11 | | teaching ministry, Saturday Night Live/Life Lessons; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Bessie Luckett was preceded in death by her | 13 | | parents; her brother, Eddie Kirkland Luckett; and her | 14 | | son-in-law, Gregory A. Hart; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Bessie Luckett is survived by her daughter, | 16 | | Debbie Luckett-Hart; her relatives, Bonnie Clark, Penny Black, | 17 | | and Tony Kennedy; and a host of neighbors and friends; | 18 | | therefore, be it
| 19 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 20 | | HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 21 | | we mourn the passing of Bessie Mae Luckett and extend our | 22 | | sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew | 23 | | and loved her; and be it further
