HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, On May 18, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was nominated to
3 be the Republican Party candidate for President at the party's
4 national convention at the Wigwam in Chicago; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Abraham Lincoln's nomination and his subsequent
6 election eventually resulted in the secession of the southern
7 states from the Union and the outbreak of the Civil War; and
 
8     WHEREAS, During the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln began the
9 liberation of African-Americans from slavery, which led to
10 constitutional recognition of their full citizenship and their
11 posterity; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Abraham Lincoln's wise and courageous leadership
13 of the nation through the Civil War led to a successful
14 conclusion with full recognition of the Union throughout all
15 its states; and
 
16     WHEREAS, By preserving the Union and freeing the slaves,
17 Abraham Lincoln accomplished what no one else in American
18 history has been able to do; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Abraham Lincoln's words and acts before and after
20 his nomination have guided and inspired millions of people

1 throughout the world; therefore, be it
 
2     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
3 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
4 designate the date of May 18, 2010 as Abraham Lincoln
5 Presidential Nomination Day in the State of Illinois and
6 encourage people of this State to reflect on the historical
7 importance of this day and commemorate the day with educational
8 and inspiring activities.
