SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Retired Lieutenant Colonel Harold E.
4 Briggs Sr., U.S.M.C., of Granite City, who passed away on April
5 3, 2010; and
 
6     WHEREAS, He was born June 22, 1926, in Granite City; after
7 high school he joined the Merchant Marines and then attended
8 McKendree College from 1946 until 1950, where he also played
9 college football for four years; after graduating he worked at
10 Granite City Steel for a short time; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Before entering the field of education as a
12 teacher, he interrupted his teaching to serve his country in
13 the United States Marine Corps in the Korean Conflict; he
14 stayed in the reserves until retiring in 1972 at the rank of
15 Lieutenant Colonel, after 23 years of faithful service; and
 
16     WHEREAS, He returned to the Granite City School District
17 and worked as a principal of an elementary school and coached
18 the freshman high school football team for 15 years; he then
19 become the first assistant for the Madison County
20 Superintendent of Schools for seven years and served as
21 Superintendent for 14 years until his retirement in 1987; and

1     WHEREAS, Mr. Briggs had a BA Degree, a Masters in
2 Education, and the following certificates in teaching:
3 Specialist certificate, All Grade Supervisory, Elementary and
4 High School Supervisory, and Administrative and Educational
5 Specialist; he was honored for his work in education with an
6 Honorary Doctorate Degree in 1987 from McKendree College; after
7 retirement he volunteered at the Granite City Hospital for many
8 years and served as a trustee for the Nameoki Township for over
9 12 years; and
 
10     WHEREAS, He was a member of the Niedringhaus United
11 Methodist Church and a avid bowler, once bowling a perfect 300
12 game for which he received an award; and
 
13     WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry
14 Arthur and Myrtle F., nee Hughes, Briggs; and his brother,
15 Harry A. Briggs Sr.; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Harold Briggs Sr. is survived by his wife of 60
17 years, Elizabeth A., nee Phillips, Briggs, whom he married on
18 June 1, 1949, in Flora; his sons, Tim Briggs and Gene Briggs;
19 his sisters, Isla Mae Williams and Erma Lee Rash; as well as
20 several nieces and nephews and many extended family members and
21 friends; therefore, be it
 
22     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL

1 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
2 his family and friends, the passing of Retired Lieutenant
3 Colonel Harold E. Briggs Sr.; and be it further
 
4     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5 presented to the family of Harold Briggs Sr. as a symbol of our
6 sincere sympathy.
