HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, On May 22, 2013, the Chicago Board of Education voted to close 50 of the system's underutilized public schools; and

WHEREAS, Many of those properties can continue to be assets for the city and their communities; and

WHEREAS, City residents and city leadership have a mutual interest in strengthening economic activity and increasing economic opportunity for an ever-increasing population; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago Public Schools Advisory Committee for School Repurposing and Community Development has created a set of guiding principles and a proposed process for repurposing schools into constructive purposes quickly and in a way that is both timely and financially viable; and

WHEREAS, If these properties cannot be repurposed through the Chicago Public School system, they should be opened to public bidding; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge the City of Chicago to begin repurposing the closed public schools within its system into new-purpose facilities as soon as possible; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be delivered to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
