HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Tom
4Hynes, who passed away on May 4, 2019; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Tom Hynes attended Quigley Preparatory Seminary
6and used his preparation for the priesthood as preparation for
7a political career; he graduated first in his class from Loyola
8Law School in 1963; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Long regarded as a Democratic powerhouse with
10national reach, Tom Hynes was elected State Senator in 1970; he
11was elected Senate President in 1977; two of his career
12highlights in Springfield were his chief sponsorship of the
13Equal Rights Amendment for women and his authoring of the
14Homeowners Property Tax Exemption; he chaired the Clinton/Gore
15presidential campaign in Illinois in 1996; he stepped down from
16his position on the Democratic National Committee in 2014; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Tom Hynes served as Democratic committeeman of the
1819th Ward in Beverly for 31 years; he served as county assessor
19from 1978 until 1997; after retiring as assessor, he worked in
20private practice as a lawyer until 2015; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Tom Hynes was a dedicated public servant and a

1true gentleman who represented his constituents and residents
2across Illinois with consummate class and dignity; his legacy
3will live on through his family of public servants who are
4committed to making a difference; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Tom Hynes is survived by his wife, Judy; his sons,
6Matt, Dan, and Thomas Hynes; his daughter, Leah Griffin; and
7his ten grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
9HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
10we mourn the passing of Tom Hynes and extend our sincere
11condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
12him; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to the family of Tom Hynes as an expression of our
15deepest sympathy.
