SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:

625 ILCS 5/3-808.2 new

Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that no vehicle owned and operated by the State, a unit of local government, or a subsidiary body thereof shall display nongovernmental license plates. Provides that every vehicle owned and operated by a unit of local government, or any subsidiary body thereof, shall affix a sticker or decal that clearly denotes the unit of local government to which the vehicle belongs, to the license plate or, if necessary, the rear of the vehicle within 6 inches of the license plate, such that it is plainly visible to a vehicle approaching from behind. Exempts vehicles being used in undercover police operations. Effective immediately.

A BILL FOR

AN ACT concerning transportation.

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, represented in the General Assembly:

Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding Section 3-808.2 as follows:

(625 ILCS 5/3-808.2 new)

Sec. 3-808.2. Prohibition of private plates on public vehicles.

(a) No vehicle owned and operated by the State, a unit of local government, or a subsidiary body thereof shall display nongovernmental license plates.

(b) Every vehicle owned and operated by a unit of local government, or any subsidiary body thereof, shall affix a sticker or decal that clearly denotes the unit of local government to which the vehicle belongs to the license plate or, if necessary, the rear of the vehicle within 6 inches of the license plate, such that it is plainly visible to a vehicle approaching from behind.

(c) This Section does not apply to vehicles being used in undercover police operations.

Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon becoming law.
