Amends the School Code. Requires a school board to prohibit teachers, school administrators, or other persons employed at a school, employed by the school or by a third party, from carrying a firearm on school grounds. Exempts safety personnel from the prohibition. Prohibits a school board from authorizing exceptions. Effective immediately.

A BILL FOR

AN ACT concerning education.

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, represented in the General Assembly:

Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Sections 10-31 and 34-18.78 as follows:

(105 ILCS 5/10-31 new)

Sec. 10-31. Prohibit employee firearms.

(a) For the purposes of this Section, "safety personnel" means a school resource officer, law enforcement officer, or security guard.

(b) Each school board shall prohibit teachers, school administrators, or other persons employed at a school, employed by the school or by a third party, from carrying firearms on school grounds. This prohibition does not apply to safety personnel.

(c) A school board may not authorize or permit any exception to or exemption from the prohibition.

Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon becoming law.
